An automatic gearbox rarely starts making noise suddenly. Usually a quiet background whine appears first, audible only within a particular range — say, accelerating in second and third, or under load on a climb. The driver puts it down to tyres or the road surface, and only months later does the sound become obvious. Here is what the early signs look like, how this whine differs from far more common causes, and what is worth checking while the repair is still small.
What early-stage whine sounds like
Early gearbox noise is an even, low whine or hum with a metallic edge, tied to engine revs and to load. Three things give away where it comes from.
The pitch changes when it shifts. Road speed has not changed, the gearbox moves to the next ratio — and the sound either fades or changes pitch. Wheel bearings and tyres do not behave that way.
It follows the throttle. The whine is there under power and fades or disappears when coasting. The reverse pattern happens too, but the point is the same: the sound reacts to the pedal.
It is there in Drive with the car standing. If the whine appears while you hold the car on the brake in Drive and disappears in neutral, the source is almost certainly the gearbox or the torque converter.
What gets checked first
Before anyone talks about a repair, a mechanic rules out the simpler and far more common causes of a hum.
- Fluid level and condition. Dark fluid smelling burnt, with metal particles on the dipstick or the pan magnets, is a diagnosis in itself.
- Wheel bearings. Their hum grows with speed and ignores the gear; it is checked with the wheels raised.
- Tyres. Sawtooth wear produces a hum that changes with the road surface and stays the same whatever the throttle is doing.
- Driveshafts and their splines. Play in the joint gives clicks as the load changes rather than a hum.

The last row needs a note: a hum or whine coming from the engine bay has nothing to do with the gearbox, even when it appears in the same conditions.
How the repair is decided
While the whine is even, quiet and not accompanied by harsh shifts, delayed engagement or overheating, you have time for a proper diagnosis rather than panic. The sensible step is to check the fluid and rule out the wheel bearings, then watch the trend: the sound growing over a couple of thousand kilometres, or jolts appearing, moves the question into the urgent column.
Two things are worth understanding about the fluid itself. First, “lifetime fluid” is a marketing claim, not a physical property: heat ages it, and in city traffic it ages faster than the mileage suggests. Second, on a high-mileage gearbox that has never been serviced, a full flush is a genuine risk — a partial change is the more conservative route, and a workshop that explains that difference rather than selling the biggest service is worth listening to.
What really extends an automatic’s life is temperature control. Heat, traffic and climbs cook the fluid harder than steady motorway running, and overheated fluid ages faster and holds a weaker film between parts. So in mostly urban use it makes sense to shorten the interval relative to the book figure, and to count towing and long wheelspin in snow as a separate load on the gearbox rather than a detail.
