An outer CV joint is the constant-velocity joint at the end of a driveshaft that transmits rotation to the wheel at any steering angle. It wears predictably and announces itself with a characteristic clicking. You can check it yourself in five minutes on an empty car park — no lift, no tools, no helper. Here is how to run the test properly, what to listen for, and why the result is sometimes a false negative.

How the test works

Find an open area with no kerbs and no people: an empty corner of a shopping centre car park early in the morning, or a spacious yard. Then, step by step:

  1. Lower both front windows — the sound comes from below and to the side, and sound deadening muffles it through closed doors.
  2. Turn the steering to full lock to the left and drive slow circles, at idle or with a little throttle. Faster than walking pace but no more than 10–15 km/h.
  3. Do two or three full circles, listening under the left and right front wheels.
  4. Repeat with the steering at full lock to the right.
  5. As a control, drive the same circles coasting, without throttle.

The sign of a worn joint is rapid metallic clicking in time with wheel rotation — “tuk-tuk-tuk”, its frequency rising with speed. Under power, when you add throttle, it is louder; coasting it weakens or disappears entirely. The joint that clicks is usually the outer one on the wheel travelling the outer arc: circling left loads the right driveshaft, circling right loads the left.

Inspect the boots separately — the rubber concertina covers on the joints. If a boot is split and grease is thrown around it, the joint’s life is already counting down: dust and water are inside. A fresh split is a reason to replace the boot alone, with a clean-out and new grease, which is far cheaper than replacing the joint.

When the test misleads you

False silence from a worn joint happens for three reasons. First, a slippery surface: on snow, ice and gravel the wheel slips before the joint is loaded. Second, too much speed: on a fast circle the clicks merge into a vague rustle and are lost in tyre noise. Third, early-stage wear, where material has been removed but the steps in the tracks have not formed yet; such a joint only shows itself under serious load, for instance turning around on an incline.

The opposite mistake is attributing someone else’s noise to the CV joint. Clicking when turning the wheel while stationary, with no movement, has almost nothing to do with driveshafts: there the strut top mount, the track rod ends or the rack itself are the usual culprits. How the repair is decided

The first question is whether the boot is intact. A split boot caught early means a boot, a clean-out and fresh grease rather than a joint — a much smaller job, and one worth asking about explicitly before agreeing to a whole driveshaft.

The second is what your car’s parts catalogue offers: on many models the outer joint is sold separately, on others only as a complete driveshaft. That decides the price, and both answers are legitimate.

Do not stretch the repair out to the last moment, but there is no need to panic after the first clicks either: a worn joint usually runs for months. The dangerous threshold is crunching audible in a straight line, and jerking when pulling away.
