The timing chain synchronises the crankshaft and the camshafts: it decides that the valves open exactly in step with the pistons. It rarely fails overnight — it reports its condition with sound, fault codes and behaviour. Below are the signs of a stretched chain by stage, the checks that can be done without stripping the engine, and how the job is decided.
What “the chain has stretched” means
The metal does not stretch like an elastic band. A chain consists of hundreds of links joined by pins and bushes, and each joint develops a microscopic clearance over time. Multiplied by the number of links, that wear adds length: 0.5–1 % of elongation is already the limit for most engines.
The slack is first taken up by the tensioner, a hydraulic ram that presses the chain through a plastic shoe using oil pressure. While its travel lasts, the engine runs quietly. When its plunger is almost fully out, the chain starts whipping the guides and the valve timing starts to drift. That is why the signs appear gradually rather than all at once.
The wear is accelerated by infrequent oil changes, a low level, frequent cold starts and long spells in traffic: the chain is lubricated by the same oil as the rest of the engine, and dirty oil works as an abrasive in the joints.
How a stretched chain sounds
The classic picture is a metallic rumble or rustle in the first seconds after a cold start, disappearing as soon as the tensioner builds pressure. The sound resembles a diesel-like clatter or metal rings pouring over each other, and comes from the timing drive end — usually the front of the engine, or the side nearest one wheel on a transverse engine.
As the wear progresses the sound changes:
- the rumble after starting lasts longer — not 1–2 seconds but 10–30 or more;
- the rustle appears on a warm engine at idle;
- on a sharp lift-off or throttle blip there is a rattle — the slack chain hitting the shoes;
- at a late stage the rumble becomes constant and loud.
The chain has a lookalike — a worn or air-locked tensioner. It produces the same sounds with a healthy chain and is noticeably cheaper to cure, so workshops check it first; signs of a failing timing chain tensioner covers it. The reverse also happens: after a long stand or an oil change even a healthy drive can be briefly noisy — the time to worry is when the sound repeats at every start and gets longer.

Signs without sound: codes and behaviour
A stretched chain shifts the shafts’ relative position, and the electronics see it before the ear hears anything:
- Check engine with correlation codes — most often P0016/P0017 (crankshaft and camshaft position mismatch), sometimes P0008;
- a rough idle, slight misfiring;
- flat acceleration and rising consumption — the timing has drifted and cylinder filling has worsened;
- hard starting, especially when cold: the starter turns longer than usual;
- on engines with cam phasers, faults from them too, because the actuators can no longer compensate for the drift.
None of these convicts the chain on its own: camshaft sensors, the phasers themselves and a dirty variable timing system give a similar picture — see signs of a failing VVT actuator. So the next step is a check.
The stages of stretch

The rate of progression is hard to predict: on some engines a chain is noisy for tens of thousands of kilometres, on others less than a season passes from the first codes to a jump. How the stretch is measured
The good news: on most engines the verdict is reached without stripping the engine.
- With a scan tool. The cam phaser correction angles and the correlation between the crankshaft and camshaft sensors show how far the timing has drifted. This is the usual first step.
- By the tensioner’s extension. The tensioner is removed and the travel it has already used is measured. A plunger that is almost fully out is a sure sign of a stretched chain.
- By the timing marks. The crankshaft mark is aligned and the camshaft marks are checked for how far they lag their proper position.
- With an endoscope — the shoes and guides are inspected for wear without removing the cover.

How the replacement is decided
The labour varies several-fold: on some engines the chain is changed in half a day, on others the front cover, the accessories and sometimes the engine itself have to come out. Ask for the quote split into parts and labour — that makes it easier to compare workshops and to see where savings are being suggested.
The kit is the standard: chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets. Fitting a new chain onto worn sprockets and an old tensioner means returning to the same problem within a short mileage. While everything is apart, the seals and gaskets you have already reached are usually renewed too, and on engines where the water pump or oil pump runs on the same chain, those as well.
Two things workshops do not always volunteer. Some crankshaft and camshaft bolts are single-use stretch bolts, and reusing them is a known cause of a repeat failure. And after assembly the engine should be turned by hand through two full revolutions with the marks re-checked before it is started — the step that catches a mistake while it is still free to fix.
After the job, ask to see the old chain next to the new one — on a worn set the difference in length is visible to the naked eye.
