The engine starts with a tick or a dull knock, and a minute or two later the sound has dissolved — a familiar picture, especially in winter. A knock that goes away with warm-up is its own class of symptom: it is almost always linked to cold thick oil and larger cold clearances, and in most cases it is the least dangerous of all engine knocks. But it has its unpleasant exceptions. Here is what knocks before warm-up, where normal ends and when a workshop is due.
Why a cold engine knocks louder
After standing overnight an engine is in its least favourable state. The oil has drained into the sump and thickened: at −20 °C even good synthetic oil flows noticeably worse than at a working +90 °C. In the first seconds after starting the pump is only distributing oil through the galleries, and the components that depend on its pressure run dry.
The second reason is thermal clearances. Engine parts are designed to reach their correct sizes at operating temperature. A cold aluminium piston sits more loosely in an iron bore than a hot one; the valvetrain clearances are different when cold too.
Hence the main diagnostic sign: if the sound honestly and completely disappears with warm-up, the source is almost certainly linked to oil or thermal expansion, and there is time for a calm diagnosis.
Hydraulic lifters: the most common culprit
A hydraulic lifter is a small plunger in the valve drive that uses oil pressure to take up the clearance automatically. Overnight the oil partly leaves them, and until the pressure is restored they tick — an even tick-tick-tick from the top of the engine at half crankshaft speed. Piston slap and the other cold knocks
Piston slap is a dull knock from the block at start-up that clears as the engine warms. A cold piston has a larger clearance in its bore and rocks from one wall to the other as the side load reverses. Moderate slap when cold is considered acceptable on many engines — manufacturers describe it in service bulletins. The concerning version is when the knock lives longer every month and starts being audible on a warm engine: that is a sign of piston and bore wear, covered in signs of cylinder bore scoring.
The timing chain tensioner does not tension the chain before oil pressure arrives — hence chatter or clatter in the first one to three seconds. A short sound in frost is borderline normal; several seconds at every start is a sign of a worn tensioner, its check valve, or a stretched chain, as set out in signs of a stretched timing chain.
Cam phasers on some engines rattle at a cold start if the locking mechanism is worn — a short rattle that disappears with oil pressure, in cam phaser rattle when cold.
A cracked exhaust manifold gives a cutting tick resembling a valve: cold, the exhaust escapes through the gap; after warm-up the metal expands and the crack closes. The distinguishing feature is a smell of exhaust under the bonnet and a sound synchronous with the revs, as described on engine ticking and in signs of a burnt exhaust manifold gasket.

What you can do yourself
Three steps before a workshop visit:
- Check the oil. Level on the dipstick, date of the last change, viscosity against the manufacturer’s specification.
- Time the knock. Literally with a stopwatch, at comparable outside temperatures. That figure and its trend week by week is the most useful information a mechanic can have.
- Record the sound. A cold start is easy to record on a phone: it happens once a day, and at the workshop on a warm engine it may already be gone.
A separate question is whether to idle the engine to warm it so it does not knock. Modern engines do not need a long idle warm-up: the oil reaches operating temperature faster while driving. A sensible compromise in frost is a minute or two at idle, then calm driving without high revs for the first five to ten minutes. That both shortens the knock and reduces cold wear.
If the knock is audible on a warm engine too, even faintly, that is a different task.
How the repair is decided
The order runs from cheap to expensive: oil and filter to the correct specification first, then a diagnosis with a stethoscope and a scan tool, and only then the parts. Two things are worth asking before agreeing to lifters or a timing kit: what was actually measured — chain stretch, cam timing offset, lifter play — and whether the oil history explains the wear, because a fresh set of parts fed by the same neglected oil regime ticks again.
