Idle is the state in which the engine runs without load at minimum revs, usually 650–900 rpm. That is where stray knocks are heard best: there is no wheel or transmission noise, and the oil pressure is at its lowest, so worn friction pairs speak up first. The good news is that a knock strictly at idle rarely means catastrophe. Here are the main causes and the ways to narrow the field without stripping anything.

Why a knock appears at idle specifically

Idle has two peculiarities. First, oil pressure is at its minimum: the oil pump is driven by the engine, and at 700 rpm it pumps noticeably less than at 3000. Everything that depends on oil pressure — hydraulic lifters, the hydraulic chain tensioner — works in its least favourable state at idle.

Second, the clearances are not loaded. Under load the parts are pressed together by gas pressure; at idle they float slightly within their wear and tap. That is why the same engine can run quietly on the motorway and tick in traffic.

If the knock instead appears or grows on acceleration, that is a different scenario with a different list of causes.

Hydraulic lifters — devices in the valve drive that take up the thermal clearance automatically using oil pressure. When worn or on poor oil they tick at half crankshaft speed. This is the commonest answer to “what is ticking at idle”; the symptom page is engine ticking. The timing chain — the drive that turns the camshafts from the crankshaft — gives a rustle or metallic rumble at idle: at low pressure the hydraulic tensioner does not fully take up the slack in a stretched chain, and it touches the guides. The accessories — alternator, water pump, belt idlers, air conditioning compressor clutch — knock and rustle “outside” the engine. The classic workshop check is a brief run with the drive belt removed. If the sound goes, the engine is not involved — signs of a worn idler pulley and a/c compressor clutch failure sounds.

Engine mounts — rubber-metal blocks that damp vibration. When they are destroyed, idle (especially in “D” with an automatic) brings shudder and dull tapping felt through the body — signs of worn engine mounts.

Ticking that is not a fault

Not every rhythmic sound at idle is a fault. Injectors on direct injection systems tick fairly loudly, and that is their normal operation: the solenoid opens and closes hundreds of times a minute. On diesels the general chattering background at idle is also a design feature rather than a symptom. History is what separates a working sound from a problem one: a factory tick was always there and does not change, while a fault sound appears suddenly and progresses. If the car is new to you, it is useful to listen to a healthy example of the same model at idle — the difference is usually obvious at once. Narrowing the field yourself

A few observations that genuinely help a diagnostician:

  1. Revs. Raise the revs smoothly to 1500–2000. The knock disappeared — hydraulic lifters or the chain tensioner are likely (the oil pressure has risen). It sped up with the revs — the source rotates with the engine.
  2. Warm-up. Note whether the engine knocks cold, hot or always. A knock only before warm-up is a separate and usually less worrying story, covered in a knock that goes away with warm-up; the opposite case is in an engine knock when hot.
  3. Air conditioning. Switch the a/c on and off at idle. If the sound appears in sync with the compressor clutch, look at the accessories.
  4. Oil. Check the level on the dipstick and recall when the oil was changed and at what viscosity. A low level and out-of-date oil are the first suspects behind a tick.
  5. Locating it by ear. Open the bonnet and try to tell where the sound comes from: above (cam cover), at the front (timing drive and accessories) or from deep in the block. Even a rough “top or bottom” halves the list of causes — the technique is in a DIY mechanic’s stethoscope.

What not to do: revving to the limiter to “blow it through”, and pouring in thickening additives before a diagnosis. The first is dangerous if there is a lubrication problem, the second masks the symptom without removing the cause.

How the repair is decided

The spread of outcomes here is wide, and the criterion is what the cheap checks eliminate. Oil at the correct specification with a new filter comes first, because it closes a large share of idle ticks on its own. Then a belt-off run to separate the accessories from the engine, and a mechanical oil pressure measurement to separate the lifters from the bearings. Only then does anyone open anything.

Two things mechanics do not always say. The labour depends far more on the engine’s layout than on the part: on one engine the lifters are changed in a couple of hours, on another it is half a day with the camshafts out — worth asking which case yours is before comparing quotes. And when the timing drive is replaced, the guides and dampers go with the chain: they are the plastic parts the chain actually beats against, and a kit without them brings the sound back.

When not to postpone the workshop

A knock at idle demands an immediate reaction in three cases: it is dull and low, from deep in the block (a suspicion of crankshaft bearings); it comes with the oil pressure light; it has grown sharply over a few days. In those situations it is better not to drive but to call a recovery truck — saving on it can turn into a rebuild. In all other cases it is enough to book a diagnosis within a reasonable time and watch whether the sound changes.
