A frequent complaint at diagnosis: the cold engine runs smoothly in the morning, but once it reaches operating temperature a knock or tick appears. That scenario is the opposite of the “morning” knock which goes away with warm-up, and it has a different list of suspects: nearly all of them are connected in some way with lubrication. Here is why a hot engine knocks more readily than a cold one and how to narrow the cause down by the behaviour of the sound.

Why warming up changes the engine’s voice

The main factor is the oil. Heated to a working 90–100 °C it becomes many times more fluid: the pressure in the lubrication system falls, especially at idle, and the oil film in the friction pairs gets thinner. While the engine is cold, thick oil hides worn clearances; when hot they are left alone with thin lubricant and start to knock.

The second factor is geometry. In some friction pairs the clearance actually shrinks with heat: an aluminium piston skirt expands faster than an iron block, which is why “piston” knock is usually heard in the morning and fades with warm-up. If the sound behaves the other way round — appearing when hot — suspicion shifts to the parts that live on an oil film: the crankshaft bearings (plain bearings) and the hydraulic lifters. Common causes: from oil to bearings

Hydraulic lifters — small plungers in the valve drive that use oil pressure to take up the thermal clearance. When hot they tick if the oil is old or too thin: warmed lubricant is pushed more easily through worn plungers and the lifter collapses. Detonation — explosive combustion of the mixture — also favours a hot engine: the higher the temperature in the chambers, the more easily it occurs. A bright pinging on acceleration in heat or uphill is its signature; the details are in signs of engine detonation.

Exhaust heat shields — tin shields expand with heat, and loose fasteners start rattling at certain engine speeds. It sounds alarming and costs next to nothing.

The role of the oil: viscosity, level, age

Before thinking about mechanics it is worth ruling out the oil itself. The typical situations in which the oil is what creates a hot knock:

  • viscosity outside the specification — for example, thin energy-saving oil in a high-mileage engine designed for something thicker;
  • the oil has served its time — with age it loses viscosity and additives, and a hot engine is the first to report it with a tick;
  • a low level — in heat and in traffic, a shortage of oil raises the temperature of what remains and drops the pressure;
  • summer overheating — in a heatwave the oil temperature in traffic is noticeably higher than on the motorway, so the knock often appears “in town in summer”.

If the knock coincided in time with an oil change or a service, start by checking what was put in and how much. That is cheaper than any diagnosis. For engines past two hundred thousand kilometres a shortened change interval is reasonable insurance: oil in a worn engine ages faster, and its viscosity for such engines often makes sense at the upper end of the specification — a question worth discussing with an engine specialist who knows that particular unit. Narrowing the cause without stripping anything

The observations take ten minutes and need no tools, but they are what separates a specific workshop visit from guesswork. It helps to do them in a quiet place with the bonnet open, on a fully warmed engine.

  1. Revs. On a warm engine raise the revs smoothly to 2000. The knock disappeared — hydraulic lifters or oil pressure are likely; it sped up with the revs — the source is in the crank mechanism.
  2. Load. Note whether the sound grows on acceleration and uphill. A knock “under throttle” argues for bearings or detonation.
  3. Location. From above — the valve drive; from deep down and below — the crankshaft; from behind and below — possibly the exhaust.
  4. The oil pressure light. If it comes on or flickers at hot idle, that points straight at the lubrication system and you should not drive any further.
  5. Idle only. If the knock is heard only at idle and disappears on the move, the scenarios are different — see an engine knock at idle.

How the repair is decided

The order runs from the cheapest answer to the most expensive one, and each step rules something out. Fresh oil of the correct specification with a new filter comes first — it closes a noticeable share of hot ticks by itself. If the sound remains, the next step is a mechanical oil pressure measurement: that single figure separates the lifters from the bearings and is worth far more than any opinion. Only after it does anyone open the engine.

Two things worth asking. What the pressure measured, in numbers, at hot idle and at 2000 rpm — and how that compares with the manufacturer’s figure. And, if lifters are proposed, whether the oil history explains their state: a fresh set fed by the same neglected oil regime ticks again within a year.

When to stop the engine at once

Three combinations demand stopping without discussion: a dull growing knock from deep in the block; any knock together with the oil pressure light on; metal shavings or glitter on the dipstick. In those cases a recovery truck is cheaper than “just making it there”: the cost of a spun bearing is in a different league. In all other cases it is enough to book a diagnosis within the next few days and not to load the engine on the way.
