Valves are the cylinder’s doors: the intake ones let air and fuel in, the exhaust ones let the burnt gases out. Between the camshaft lobe and the valve there is a small clearance — an allowance for the parts expanding as they heat. While the clearance is correct the valvetrain runs almost silently; when it drifts, a characteristic ticking appears. Here is how to recognise valve clatter, why clearances change, and what an adjustment involves.
What valve clatter sounds like
The classic picture is an even dry ticking from the top of the engine, like a fast sewing machine. The key markers:
- the sound comes from under the rocker cover, not from deep in the block;
- the frequency is half crankshaft speed: the camshaft turns half as fast, so the ticking sounds unhurried relative to the revs;
- the clatter is audible at idle and quickens with the revs;
- on a warm engine it does not disappear entirely and often becomes clearer.
Its temperature behaviour is a separate clue. The clearance is larger on a cold engine, so light ticking after starting that fades with warm-up is still within normal. A knock that persists or grows when hot, however, is almost always a sign of genuinely enlarged clearances: the parts have expanded and the sound remains, which means wear has used up the margin.

Why the clearance drifts
On engines with manual adjustment the clearance changes through natural wear, and the direction of the change matters more than the fact of it:
- the clearance grows when the camshaft lobe, the rocker or the valve stem tip wears — the valvetrain starts working with impact, hence the ticking;
- the clearance shrinks when the valve seat recesses and the valve sinks into the head — there is almost no sound, and therein lies the danger: the valve stops closing fully, loses the heat path through its seat and can burn, as covered in signs of a burnt valve by ear.
LPG (hotter, drier combustion), overheating and long intervals without a check all speed the process up. Engines with hydraulic lifters have no manual adjustment — there the clearance is taken up automatically, and ticking means problems with the oil or the lifters themselves; what driving with that means is in what happens if you drive with noisy hydraulic lifters.
The accompanying signs
Clatter rarely comes alone. Alongside it people usually notice:

The reverse situation — signs with no clatter — also happens: the car has become flat, consumption is up, there is a slight shake at idle, and there is no ticking. On LPG engines that is the typical picture of shrunken clearances, and it is more dangerous than the noisy one. So on gas you cannot go by ear alone — a scheduled measurement is needed.
How clearances are checked and adjusted
The check is mechanical: on a cold engine the rocker cover comes off and a feeler gauge measures the clearance between the lobe and the follower for each valve, against the manufacturer’s table. What follows depends on the design:
- screw and locknut — the clearance is set with a screwdriver and a spanner in a few minutes per valve; that is how many simple engines work;
- shims or buckets — a component of the right thickness is selected for each valve; the work takes longer and costs more, often with parts ordered and a second assembly.
The interval follows the specific engine’s schedule, usually every 40,000–100,000 km. A practical rule: if an engine with manual adjustment has started ticking and the service history is unknown (a recently bought car), a clearance check is one of the first sensible steps.
Two things are worth clarifying before booking. First, which adjustment method your engine uses — the price differs several-fold, and a mechanic can tell you from the VIN or the engine code in advance. Second, whether the specification calls for a cold adjustment: clearances are measured on a cold engine, so the car is often left for several hours or brought in first thing without warming up. While the cover is off, replacing the rocker cover gasket makes sense — a second visit because of oil weeping costs more than the gasket.
What ignoring it leads to
The large-clearance scenario develops slowly: impact working peens the valve tips and wears the lobes, and after tens of thousands of kilometres the camshaft joins the bill. The small-clearance scenario is faster and dearer: a valve that no longer seats overheats, burns, compression in that cylinder falls, and the repair becomes a cylinder head job with a new valve and seat work. So “quiet means fine” does not apply to valves: a scheduled check is cheaper than either scenario.
