A burnt valve is a burnt-away section on the seating face of the valve head, through which the cylinder loses its seal. After that the engine cannot compress the mixture properly in one cylinder, and the car acquires a set of noticeable symptoms, from a rough idle to characteristic popping in the exhaust. The theory can be formed fairly confidently by ear, but it still has to be confirmed with instruments. Here is both.

What it sounds like

The main sign is rhythmic popping in the exhaust at a frequency related to engine speed. A muffled “puff-puff” with an even interval comes from the tailpipe; it is clearer at idle, and with the throttle blipped the frequency rises with the revs. If an intake valve has burnt, the popping goes into the intake instead: a sharp cough around the air filter or the throttle body.

The second layer is a change in how the engine runs. Misfiring appears, the idle starts hunting, vibration is felt in the wheel and the floor, and the car loses power. A telling detail: the symptom is stable and does not depend on warm-up, unlike many ignition problems.

The most common confusion is with a burnt exhaust manifold gasket: its ticking is also rhythmic and also follows the revs. Misfiring combined with knocking has its own breakdown in the engine misfires and knocks, and metallic pinging under load in signs of engine detonation.

What confirms the theory

Hearing gives the direction, instruments the proof.

  1. Reading the codes. A misfire code for a specific cylinder narrows the search, though it does not name the cause by itself.
  2. Swapping the plug and coil into a neighbouring cylinder. If the problem moves, the ignition is to blame. If it stays, it is mechanical.
  3. A compression test. The problem cylinder reads noticeably lower than the rest.
  4. A leak-down test. Air is fed into the cylinder: hissing in the exhaust means the exhaust valve, in the intake means the intake valve, in the cooling system means the head gasket.
  5. An endoscope. Inspecting the valve head and the piston crown through the plug hole settles it without disassembly.

How the repair is decided

Two things decide it, and neither is the noise itself.

The first is the cause, because it decides whether the story repeats. A burnt valve usually grows out of incorrect valve clearances: the valve stops seating fully, loses the contact through which it sheds heat, and gradually burns away. Overheating, detonation on poor fuel, faulty injectors and driving with long-standing misfires all help it along — backfiring into the intake is a related warning, covered in intake backfire: the causes. After a head repair it is sensible to check what led to it, or the new valve follows the same path.

The second is the scope. A head repair means a new valve and seat work, but the question worth asking is what the endoscope showed on the piston and the bore: burnt valve material can score both, and that is the difference between a head job and a rebuild. Ask for that inspection before the head comes off, not after the parts are ordered.

The difference between those two answers is the price of delay. Driving with rhythmic popping and misfiring leads directly to an overheated converter and a damaged cylinder.
