“Running on three” is what drivers used to say about a four-cylinder engine when one cylinder stopped working. The engine shakes at idle, the revs wander, power drops, and there can be a smell of fuel from the tailpipe. If a knock joins in, the situation is more serious than the average case: either the rough running is rocking worn engine mounts, or the misfire and the knock have one mechanical cause inside the engine. Here are both scenarios and the order to search in.
Why a misfire and a knock often arrive together
First, the link. A dead cylinder makes crankshaft rotation uneven: the engine jerks on every cycle, and those jerks pass into the body through the mounts — the rubber-and-metal pads it hangs on. A worn mount answers with dull knocks that would not be audible on a smoothly running engine. In that scenario the knock is a consequence, and it goes away with the misfire.
The second scenario is nastier: one mechanical fault produces both. A burnt valve knocks and does not hold compression. Scoring in a cylinder lowers compression and knocks with the piston skirt. A failed hydraulic lifter ticks and stops the valve opening as it should. Here the knock is not an echo but the voice of the fault itself.

The good news: statistically most misfires come down to ignition — plugs and coils, the cheapest line in the table. The bad news: the combination of misfiring and knocking is the one that most often lands in the lower, expensive rows.
Finding the dead cylinder
Step one is a scan tool. It shows misfire counters per cylinder: you can see whether one cylinder is affected or several, constantly or occasionally. Step two is the classic swap: move the plug and coil from the problem cylinder to a neighbouring one. If the misfire follows the part, that part is guilty; if it stays where it was, the cause is the injector or the mechanics of that cylinder.
If ignition and fuel are cleared, compression is measured. Low compression in one cylinder is a reason to look inside with a borescope — a flexible camera through the plug hole. That is how a burnt valve is told apart from scoring on the bore walls.
What the character of the knock tells you
The knock itself points somewhere too. Dull single impacts as you press and release the throttle are the signature of engine mounts. An even tick from the top of the engine is the valve train or the lifters. A sharp metallic sound as the load changes can indicate the gudgeon pins — a rare but distinctive case. A heavy, growing knock from the bottom of the block combined with a misfire is the worst variant, and with that one you should not drive under your own power at all.

Why waiting costs more than fixing
A misfiring engine damages itself and the systems around it. Unburnt fuel from the dead cylinder washes the oil film off the bore — ring wear speeds up and scoring appears. The same fuel finishes burning in the catalytic converter: the ceramic melts, and instead of a set of spark plugs the estimate now includes a converter. Finally, mounts destroyed by vibration add their own line to the bill. That is why misfiring plus knocking is a case where a week of delay genuinely changes the total.
One practical note about the repair: when a converter has been damaged by a long-running misfire, replacing it without fixing the misfire first simply destroys the new one. Any workshop that offers a converter before the misfire is cured has the order wrong.
