An idler pulley is a small part nobody thinks about until the engine bay starts howling. Its job is simple: to route the accessory belt along the path it needs, around the alternator, air conditioning and water pump pulleys. Inside the idler is an ordinary ball bearing, and it ages the way any bearing does — first the timbre changes, then vibration appears, and finally the unit seizes. Here is how that wear sounds, how to separate it from similar noises, and what decides the repair.
What a worn idler sounds like
The first sign is an even whine or hum tied to engine revs rather than road speed. With the car parked, raise the revs smoothly: the sound rises and falls with the tachometer needle. At idle it often reads as a quiet rustle or “sand shuffling”; at 2,000–2,500 rpm it turns into a clear whine.
The second sign is a dependence on temperature and moisture. While the grease in the bearing is thick, the sound is louder in the morning; after warm-up it can almost disappear and come back in the evening. Noise appearing after a wash or after driving through deep water is characteristic too: water washes out what grease is left.
The third is a metallic edge. When the bearing cage starts to break up, the even whine turns into a rumble with occasional clicks. That is a late stage and is best not reached. The full range of shades of this sound is on the symptom page belt squeal.

How to check it yourself
The most reliable check is done with the engine off. The belt is removed by releasing the tensioner, and each pulley is turned by hand in turn. A healthy one spins for a long time, silently and without noticeable resistance. A failing one gives itself away with crunching, a notchy feel, rustling or visible play if you rock it across its axis.
If you would rather not remove the belt, an indirect test works: with the engine running and your hands and clothing well clear of the rotating parts, hold a long screwdriver or a hose against the idler’s housing with the other end to your ear. How the repair is decided
The practical rule is simple: if the belt has covered noticeable mileage, the idlers are replaced with it rather than one at a time. The difference in the cost of parts is smaller than the cost of removing and refitting the belt a second time.
Two things a workshop does not always mention. First, an automatic tensioner has a wear indicator marking that shows whether it is still within range — a new belt on an out-of-range tensioner will squeal again. Second, on engines with a stretch-fit belt there is no tensioner at all and the belt requires a special fitting tool; a belt levered on with a screwdriver is damaged from the first minute even if it does not show.
