A squeal from under the bonnet is a sound that is easy to get used to. It turns up on a frosty morning, lasts half a minute and goes away, and by the next week it feels like a normal part of starting the car. What is squealing is the accessory belt — the rubber band that drives the alternator and, on most engines, the water pump and the power steering pump as well. Here is what the owner risks by leaving it, and where the line runs between “I will get there” and “time for a workshop”.

What a squeal means

A belt squeals when it slips on a pulley: the speed of the belt and the speed of the groove stop matching, the rubber rubs on metal and produces a high note. There are three reasons for slipping. First, the belt has stretched or its ribs have worn, and it no longer grips the pulley as tightly as when new. Second, the tensioner has given up: the spring or hydraulic mechanism that keeps the belt under constant load. Third, fluid has got onto the belt — coolant from a weeping pump, oil from a seal, or simply water after a wash.

There is a fourth scenario often confused with belt squeal: a seizing bearing in an idler, the alternator or the water pump. It also gives a high note, but the belt has nothing to do with it — the unit is resisting rotation and the belt slips over it.

Check the simplest thing separately: switch the engine off and look at the belt with a torch. Cross cracks in the ribs, frayed edges, a shiny “varnished” surface — all of these are reasons not to drag it out. What you risk by carrying on

The squeal itself does not break the car. A snapped belt does — and here everything depends on the engine’s layout. If the belt drives only the alternator, a break means no charging: the car will run from half an hour to a couple of hours on the battery and then stop. If the same belt drives the water pump, a break stops coolant circulation and overheating is minutes away. Overheating means a warped cylinder head and a repair two orders of magnitude dearer than a new belt.

A separate nuisance: a snapped belt can be dragged under a cover or wrap itself round the pulleys, damaging sensors and wiring. So the logic here is the same as with other “tolerable” noises: the situation is not dangerous until it becomes dangerous instantly. How the repair is decided

The first question is whether the belt is the cause or the victim. A belt that squeals because coolant is dripping on it will squeal again a month after replacement unless the leak is found; the same goes for oil from a front crank seal. Ask what was on the belt when it came off.

The second is what goes back on with it. The idlers and the tensioner have a service life comparable to the belt, and the labour to reach them has already been paid for — replacing the belt alone on a high-mileage engine is the classic repeat visit. On engines with a decoupler pulley on the alternator (common on diesels and modern petrol engines) that pulley is a frequent cause of squeal in its own right and is worth checking while everything is off.

The third is the tension itself. Many modern engines use a stretch-fit belt that requires a special tool and must never be levered on with a screwdriver, and an automatic tensioner has a wear indicator marking that tells you whether it is still within range. A workshop that mentions neither is guessing.
