Ticking from the top of the engine is a sound almost every owner of a high-mileage car has heard. Its frequency is exactly half the crankshaft speed, its timbre is dry and sewing-machine-like, and its source is almost always the same area: the valvetrain under the rocker cover. From there the paths diverge. On some engines the clearance between the lobe and the valve is adjusted by hand with shims or screws; on others hydraulic lifters — small hydraulic cups that adjust the clearance themselves using oil pressure — take care of it. The two cases sound alike and are cured completely differently.
What is knocking in each case
A mechanical clearance grows as the lobes, rockers and contact faces wear. The lobe stops running smoothly onto the follower and starts striking it — hence an even, monotonous ticking, the same cold and warm.
A hydraulic lifter ticks for a different reason: it cannot fill with oil. The culprits are either contaminated passages and a coked plunger, or low system pressure, or oil that is too thick or has lost its viscosity. That knock is almost always louder on a cold engine and changes as it warms.
Telling them apart by ear

The first thing to do is find out which mechanism your engine has. There may simply be no hydraulic lifters, and then the question is closed: it is a clearance adjustment, covered in signs of valve clatter. The second is to warm the engine and listen for the change. Where to start the check
The order that saves money:
- Oil and filter. Check the level, the age and the viscosity. Oil that is too thick or past its life is the most common and the cheapest cause of lifter noise.
- Oil pressure. If the pressure light flickers or the idle wanders, the problem may be not the lifters but the pump and the pick-up.
- Localisation. With a stethoscope or a screwdriver, work along the rocker cover: a clearance knock usually has a clear point of maximum volume over one cylinder.
- Measuring the clearances. On an adjustable valvetrain that is done with a feeler gauge on a cold engine and gives an unambiguous answer.
Being able to describe the dynamics of a sound to a mechanic speeds up the diagnosis enormously — the same principle works elsewhere, for instance in brake squeal: pads or discs.
How the repair is decided
The spread in cost comes from the design: on one engine access to the valvetrain takes an hour, on another it means removing accessories and drives. So it is worth asking a workshop not only for the total but for what the job includes: the rocker cover gasket, adjustment shims and fresh oil are often counted separately, and the difference between two quotes is usually explained by those items rather than by margin.
Two more questions. Whether the clearances will be measured before anything is ordered — on an adjustable engine that measurement is the diagnosis, and shims are selected from it. And whether the oil passages were assessed on a lifter engine: a new set of lifters fed through blocked galleries ticks again within months.
