Half the difficulty in diagnosing by ear is not hearing the noise but working out where it comes from. Under the bonnet the sources stand twenty centimetres apart, and to the ear they blend together. A mechanic’s stethoscope solves the problem literally: it carries vibration from one part’s casing straight into your ear and cuts out everything else. You can build one in a couple of minutes from what is already in the garage.
Three versions that work
A screwdriver with a long shaft. The quickest option. The tip rests against the casing of the part, the end of the handle presses against your ear or the cheekbone next to it. The longer and thicker the shaft, the better it conducts. A plastic handle damps less than you would think, and a wooden one works even better.
A hose. A length of rubber or silicone hose 60–80 cm long with an 8–12 mm bore: one end in your ear, the other held near the unit but not pressed against it. This version catches airborne sound and is good for finding air leaks, whistles and hissing.
A tube with a tip. A metal tube, or a long bolt with a piece of hose taped to it. A hybrid of the first two: the rigid tip picks up casing vibration, the soft part carries it to your ear without losses.

Where to hold it
The order in which you work round the engine bay matters: listen unit by unit, not at random.
- Alternator — on the casing near the rear cover, where the bearing sits. A hum or whine that grows with revs is the typical picture of a dying bearing.
- Idlers and the belt tensioner — on the bracket or the idler spindle. Rustling and rumbling live there too.
- Water pump — on the pump housing. A hum and a whine, often with traces of coolant.
- Air conditioning compressor — with the a/c on and off, to catch the difference.
- Rocker cover — valvetrain ticking.
- Timing cover at the end of the block — chain rustle.

Safety rules
A running engine forgives fewer mistakes than you would think. The minimum set of rules:
- handbrake on, gearbox in neutral or park, chocks under the wheels;
- sleeves buttoned, laces and drawstrings tucked away, hair tied back, watches and bracelets off;
- bring the tool in from the side, not over the belt or the fan;
- the exhaust manifold and hoses are red hot — do not touch them, not even briefly;
- listen in short bursts of 5–10 seconds and step back between them.
The electric cooling fan starts on its own, without warning, even on a hot engine that has been switched off. Never keep a hand in its path under any circumstances.
A separate word on volume: pressing the tool against a casing amplifies the sound several times over, and next to a running engine that is a real load on your hearing. Start with a light touch and increase the pressure gradually rather than putting your ear straight onto the handle at full force.
Where a stethoscope is powerless
The tool works with the car stationary, so anything that only makes noise on the move is beyond it: wheel bearings, dampers, control arm bushes, brakes. Those are checked by other means — rocking, a pry bar, driving over bumps and a lift. A bought stethoscope with a diaphragm is not expensive and hears more cleanly than a home-made one, but the home-made version still answers the main question: this unit or the one next to it.
