The electromagnetic clutch is the part that makes it possible to switch the air conditioning off at all. The compressor pulley is turned by the accessory belt all the time, but it only connects to the compressor shaft when the coil is energised and the pressure plate is pulled against the pulley. Hence the familiar click under the bonnet when you press the button. And hence the main diagnostic clue: if a foreign noise appears exactly at that click and disappears when you switch off, the circle of suspects narrows sharply.

How the unit works and what wears out

There are three key elements in the clutch: the pulley with its bearing, which turns constantly; the electromagnet coil, fixed to the compressor body; and the pressure plate on the shaft, pulled towards the pulley when energised. Between the plate and the pulley the factory sets a small air gap — fractions of a millimetre.

Usually one of three things wears. The pulley bearing, which lives in engine bay heat under constant belt load. The friction faces of the plate and the pulley, which wear with every engagement until the gap grows so far that the coil no longer has the force to pull the plate in. And the coil itself, which can go open circuit or short between turns.

The simple check takes a minute. Start the engine with the a/c off and listen to the engine bay. Then switch the a/c on and compare. A sound that appeared exactly with the click is the clutch or the compressor. A sound that was there before you pressed the button is the pulley bearing or another accessory idler. Why it should not be ignored

Clutch noise is unpleasant not in itself but because it sits on the same belt as everything else. A seized pulley bearing snaps or throws off the accessory belt, and with it the car loses the alternator, the water pump and the power steering — that is no longer “inconvenient” but a stop on the road with a risk of overheating.

The second scenario is slipping. When the gap has grown, the plate is pulled in loosely and burns; in bad cases the friction faces weld together, the clutch stops disengaging at all, and the compressor turns permanently.

Do not confuse the chattering with a noise inside the engine. A sound coming from the cylinder block that ignores the a/c button is a different story altogether — compare it with the symptom page knocking in the engine or with humming under the bonnet at idle.

How the repair is decided

The diagnostic order is usually this: inspect and listen to the accessories, check the system pressures, measure the clutch air gap with a feeler gauge, check the coil resistance. Some faults are solved without replacing the compressor: on many cars the clutch is available as a separate assembly, and sometimes adjusting the gap by removing one shim is enough.

Two questions are worth asking before you agree to a compressor. First, what the gap measured — a number, not “it looked worn”. Second, whether the refrigerant charge and pressures were checked first: a system running low makes the clutch cycle constantly, and that cycling is what burns the friction faces. Replacing a compressor without finding the leak means the new one works under the same conditions that killed the old one.
