A hum at idle is awkward because it has no link to speed or manoeuvres: the car is standing still and the sound is there. But idle offers another lever — it is easy to interrogate: switch consumers on and off, listen with the bonnet up, change the revs. So finding the source on a stationary car is simpler than it seems, as long as you work in order.

First separate hum from vibration

Step one is to work out what you are actually hearing. Low-frequency shaking that reaches the steering wheel, the seat and the body is usually not the sound of a component but engine vibration passed into the body through worn mounts. A hum in the narrow sense is a sound: even, mid or low pitched, coming from the engine bay. Its source is almost always something that rotates. Put a hand on a wing: if there is no vibration but there is a sound, you are dealing with sound.

It is worth checking the revs straight away as well. A normal idle on most cars is 650–850 rpm; if the tachometer sits noticeably higher and the engine hums simply because it is running fast, the cause is not a bearing but the engine management — from a cold engine to an air leak. A hum is worth investigating at normal idle speed.

The cooling fan: the most common answer

With the car standing, no air passes through the radiator, so the cooling fan runs often and for a long time — especially in hot weather and with the air conditioning on. A hum that comes in waves, appearing and disappearing by itself every few minutes, is almost certainly it.

Two things make the sound abnormal. A worn electric fan bearing hums louder than usual and howls. Some cars with longitudinal engines use a viscous coupling that engages the fan as the engine heats up; when it fails, the fan runs at full speed constantly and the engine roars even when cold. The check is easy: wait for the fan to switch off — if the hum goes with it, you have found the source.

A separate question is why the fan runs so much at all. A radiator blocked with fluff and dust, a dead thermostat or an air lock in the cooling system keep it turning almost without pause. In that case the hum is not a fan fault but a symptom of overheating, and the place to start is the radiator and the coolant level.

The belt and the accessories

If the hum is constant and does not follow the fan cycles, move on to what the accessory belt drives. The convenient part is that many of them can be interrogated with switches:

  • the air conditioning compressor — switch the A/C on and off: if the hum follows the button, you have your candidate;
  • the alternator — switch on main beam and the screen heaters: worn bearings hum more noticeably under the extra load;
  • the power steering pump — turn the wheel while parked: if the sound grows, check the fluid level and the pump;
  • idlers, the tensioner and the water pump — these ignore switches; they are listened to with a stethoscope or identified with a brief run without the belt.

If the switches show nothing, the belt itself is the remaining tool: a workshop removes it briefly and runs the engine for half a minute. Silence means the noise was in the accessories, and the units are then listened to one by one. Over time bearing hum turns into squeal and howl.

The timing drive and the engine itself

Less often the hum at idle comes from under the valve cover — from the timing drive. A stretched timing chain at low revs produces a sound on the border between a hum and a metallic rustle. On engines with a timing belt, its idlers can hum too — quietly, because a plastic cover muffles them.

For urgency, use this order: fan and compressor hum can wait for a scheduled appointment; alternator and idler hum is a question of weeks; and water pump hum with coolant traces cannot be postponed, because that unit belongs to the cooling system and its failure on a long drive means an overheated engine.

One practical note about the repair: when an idler or tensioner is replaced, the belt goes with it. It is a small part next to the labour already being paid for, and a new idler running on an old, stretched belt is a short-lived fix.
