The timing chain drives the valvetrain: it links the crankshaft to the camshafts and makes the valves open exactly on time. Unlike a belt, a chain is metal and runs in oil, so the sounds of its wear are its own — not a squeal but a characteristic rustle. Recognising it by ear is doubly useful: a chain drive wears slowly, and the sound gives you time for a calm repair rather than an emergency one.
What a chain rustle sounds like
The main sound is a metallic rustle, as though small coins were being poured inside the engine or an old sewing machine were running. It comes from the front of the engine (where the chain is), follows the revs — quickening on a throttle blip — and is heard best at idle with the bonnet open.
As the wear progresses the rustle gains detail: individual ticks appear, the sound becomes uneven and ragged, and on lift-off there is a short metallic slap as the slack run of chain hits the guide. At an advanced stage the rustle becomes a distinct chatter and clatter when cold.
Listen in a quiet place, crouching by the front wheel on the timing drive side or leaning under an open bonnet. A useful reference is a temperature comparison: record the cold start on your phone in the morning and the warm idle in the evening. On a healthy chain drive the recordings are almost identical; on a worn one the difference is immediately audible.

When a rustle is normal
A brief rustle in the first one or two seconds after a cold start is acceptable on many engines. The reason is the hydraulic tensioner: the device that keeps the chain taut using engine oil pressure. Overnight some oil drains out of it, and until pressure builds the chain runs with a little slack.
Three questions define the boundary. The sound goes within a couple of seconds — acceptable. It lasts five seconds or more and repeats at every start — tensioner or chain wear, covered in signs of a failing timing chain tensioner. Why a chain starts rustling
A chain does not stretch like an elastic band — it lengthens through wear in dozens of joints: each pin and bush wears and the total length grows by millimetres. That is enough for the tensioner to reach the end of its travel and for the chain to start oscillating and rubbing the guides.
Several factors speed it up:
- old or infrequently changed oil — the joints are lubricated by the same oil as the engine, and abrasive in it grinds the chain fastest;
- a worn hydraulic tensioner — it does not hold pressure and the chain sags;
- worn guides and shoe — the plastic wears and the free movement grows;
- frequent cold starts and short trips — the drive spends longer running before oil pressure builds.
Typical chain life is 150,000–250,000 km, but the spread is enormous: on engines sensitive to oil, stretched chains turn up at 90,000, while with careful servicing a drive reaches 300,000. The practical rule is simple: the shorter the oil change intervals (7,000–10,000 km in hot and dusty conditions), the longer the chain stays quiet.

The stages: from rustle to a jumped tooth

How the repair is decided
The main risk is the chain jumping a sprocket tooth. The valve timing shifts, and on most modern engines the valves meet the pistons: the repair turns from “change the chain” into rebuilding half the engine. The second scenario is worn guides breaking up, with the fragments going under the chain.
Before replacement the wear can be confirmed objectively. Many workshops assess the stretch without dismantling — with a scan tool from the camshaft correlation angles, or by the tensioner plunger position through an inspection hole. That measurement costs no more than an ordinary diagnosis and saves you from the main mistake: replacing a chain “just in case” when what was rustling was, say, an accessory idler.
It is worth replacing the complete kit — chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets — because a new chain on worn guides rustles again. While the front of the engine is open, the water pump is often right there, and its signs of wear are in signs of a failing water pump; asking whether it is included avoids doing the same disassembly twice.
