Engine mounts are the rubber-and-metal assemblies the engine hangs on inside the body. Their job is twofold: to hold the weight of the unit and to damp its vibration so it does not reach the cabin. The rubber ages, cracks and tears, and hydraulic mounts (with fluid inside) lose their filling — and then the car starts to shake, jolt and knock. Here are the signs in order, from the first hints to the state where nothing should be put off.
The main sign: vibration at idle
The most common and earliest symptom is a fine shake with the car stationary and the engine running. The steering wheel vibrates, the mirror trembles, small things rattle in the cup holder. The characteristic details:
- in neutral the vibration is weaker; in drive with the brake held it is noticeably stronger, because the loaded engine leans onto the worn mount;
- as revs rise the shake often disappears or changes character;
- it can change with warm-up — rubber stiffened by cold behaves differently from warm rubber.
On cars with automatic gearboxes worn mounts show up earlier and more clearly: sitting in drive on the brake is their standard torture, with the engine constantly pulling against the brake and pushing on the rear mount. On a manual the same fault stays unnoticed longer — in neutral in traffic the engine barely loads the mounts at all.

Jolts and knocks: mounts under load
When the rubber is torn the engine gains freedom of movement, and mechanical symptoms appear:
- a jolt when selecting drive or reverse — a perceptible lurch of the body as the transmission loads the engine;
- a lunge on sharp throttle and lift-off — the engine rocks back and forth, sometimes with an audible dull thump against its stop;
- a knock under acceleration and braking — a detached mount lets the engine hit its bracket; how to tell that knock from the others is on knocking when accelerating;

How fast it degrades depends on the design: an ordinary rubber mount dies over years; a hydraulic mount that has lost its fluid dies in weeks, because its rubber was never meant to work without hydraulic support.
How to check the mounts yourself
You need a helper. Open the bonnet, stand to one side and have the helper load the engine gently with the brake held: select drive, add a little throttle, then reverse. Watch the engine: a lean of a couple of centimetres with a smooth return is normal; a sharp lurch with noticeable travel or a dull thump means free play in a mount. The second test is inspection. With a torch, look at the accessible mounts: cracks right through the rubber, rubber separating from metal, fluid stains on a hydraulic mount — all are reasons for replacement. A sagged engine is sometimes visible in the clearances too: the pulleys sit lower than usual, the exhaust is stretched at the manifold joint.
Bear in mind that not every mount is visible from above: the lower torque link on many front-wheel-drive cars hides behind the subframe and can only be inspected from a pit or a lift. If the upper mounts look alive but the symptoms are there, the lower one is very likely torn — and that is the most common outcome of the diagnosis.
Remember too that dull knocks from below also come from exhaust mountings and the undertray — before blaming the mounts it is worth ruling out the simple causes in clattering under the car over bumps, where the source is cured by tightening fasteners.
How the repair is decided
There is no need to replace every mount at once: the ones that pass inspection will happily see out their life. But checking the whole set while one is being replaced is sensible — their loads are connected, and a fresh stiff mount next to three tired ones takes more than its share.
On the choice of part the guide is this: for ordinary driving a quality aftermarket mount from a known rubber-to-metal manufacturer is enough, while an original is justified for hydraulic mounts with complex internals. A very cheap mount made of hard rubber formally lasts a long time but passes into the body exactly the vibration the mount existed to damp — a dubious saving.
One thing workshops do not always mention: the bolts. Many mount fixings are stretch bolts specified for single use and a torque-plus-angle sequence, and the engine has to be supported at the right height while they are tightened. A mount bolted up with the engine hanging at the wrong angle sits pre-loaded and tears again within months.
