A rattle under the floor that appears as speed builds and fades as you slow down almost never comes from the suspension. It comes from what is bolted to the floor: heat shields, the exhaust system, the undertray, plastic wheel arch liners. Those parts weigh nothing next to the car, but each has its own resonant frequency — and when vibration from the road and the engine lands on it, a tinny concert starts underneath. Here are the sources, the simple checks and what happens if you leave it.
Where a rattle at speed comes from
- Heat shields. Thin metal sheets between the exhaust and the floor. The spot welds rot away over time, the factory clamps loosen, and the sheet starts vibrating against the pipe. This is the single most common cause of rattling.
- Exhaust hangers. The rubber rings the system hangs from. Stretched hangers let the pipe wander and touch the body at certain engine speeds.
- The flexible section. The corrugated metal bellows between the manifold and the pipe. When its braid tears it rattles and hisses, and the sound grows under load.
- The undertray and arch liners. Loose bolts and lost clips turn a sheet of metal or plastic into a vibrating membrane — a clatter over bumps and a fine rattle at speed from the airflow.
- A silencer breaking up inside. Detached internal baffles rattle inside the box — a metallic sound that seems to roll around.

Speed, revs or bumps: the key question
To narrow the list, answer one question: what exactly does the rattle follow?

Answering that question saves money: it shortens the search from “somewhere under the car” to a specific part before you even arrive. Give the mechanic the conditions — speed, revs, gear — and an hour-long inspection becomes a ten-minute one.
If the rattle can be reproduced with the car parked by raising the revs, the source is certainly in the exhaust or its shields, and that is the easiest case to find. If it also rings at idle, the search starts at the front of the system. Finding the source without a lift
The first test is stationary. With the engine warm (careful: the exhaust is hot) ask someone to raise the revs smoothly from 800 to 3,000 while you listen from below, from different sides. The rattle usually narrows down to half a metre of pipe.
The second test is your hand. With the car cold, tap along the silencer with your fist: a healthy system answers with a dull sound, a loose shield with a tinny ring, and a broken-up silencer with a clatter inside the box.
The third test is the fasteners. Shake the undertray, check the arch liner clips, look at the rubber exhaust hangers: cracks and stretched loops are visible to the eye. While you are there, see whether the pipe hangs closer to the body on one side.
An important caveat: vibration at speed accompanied by a shaking steering wheel is a different story, usually wheel balancing or the chassis rather than shields. If the rattle comes with knocking over bumps and play in the steering, the suspension deserves a separate check.
What ignoring it leads to
A rattling shield by itself is a comfort issue, and people drive with one for years. But every cause on the list has a sequel:
- a loose shield eventually breaks off; without it the heat of the pipe reaches the floor, cables and lines, and over dry grass that becomes a fire question;
- a torn flexible section tears further — the exhaust leak grows, the car gets louder, and fumes rise towards the engine bay and the cabin ventilation;
- a pipe sagging on stretched hangers wears through itself and whatever it hits — instead of penny rubbers you get a bill for welding;
- a loose undertray sheds bolts one at a time, and a sheet coming away at speed is dangerous both for your car and for whoever is behind.
So the sensible strategy is to find the source at the next convenient opportunity, even if the noise does not yet bother you.
How the repair is decided
Most rattles are closed by the cheapest line on the list: a shield tightened or clamped, a hanger replaced — half an hour on a lift. The questions worth asking are about the exhaust itself. If a flexible section has torn, ask whether it is being replaced as a section or together with the front pipe: on many cars the flex is welded in, and the choice affects how long the repair lasts. If the silencer has broken up inside, ask whether the system is being welded or the box replaced — welding is cheaper but the corrosion that caused it is usually not local.
