A rattle that appears the moment you accelerate and fades at a steady speed is a sound with a double bottom. Most often it is harmless: under drive the engine tilts, moves the exhaust, and somewhere underneath a loose heat shield starts to buzz. But knocking — the destructive kind of combustion that can kill pistons over thousands of kilometres — has exactly the same timing. Here is how to tell one from the other and what to check, in order.

The mechanics: why the noise follows acceleration

The engine sits in the body on flexible mounts. When you press the throttle, torque tilts the engine — noticeably on worn mounts, by a couple of centimetres. The exhaust bolted to it moves as well: the front pipe, the flexible section, the catalytic converter. From there, two scenarios:

  • the pipe or its shield touches the body, the subframe or the steering linkage — and you hear a rattle from below for exactly as long as you hold the throttle;
  • the flexible section — the braided bellows that absorbs those movements — is torn, and it hisses and buzzes as it moves.

Lifting off returns the engine to its place and the noise disappears. That clean link — drive on, noise on — is what separates a mechanical rattle from most other sounds. A useful detail for observation: a mechanical rattle is usually the same in any gear at the same pedal effort, while noises that follow wheel speed or engine revs behave differently and change with the gear.

Rattle or knocking: the main question

Knocking is explosive combustion, heard as a sharp metallic ringing. Confusing it with a heat shield is dangerous, so compare the signs:

What to check, in order

  1. The parked test. Raise the revs to 2,000–3,000 in neutral. If the rattle appears, the source is in the exhaust and is then found by tapping and looking. If it does not, move to step 2.
  2. The load test. On an empty road, accelerate in a high gear from low revs. Sharp ringing from the front is the knocking theory: check which fuel it started on and get it diagnosed.
  3. Look underneath. On a lift or a ramp: signs of the pipe touching the body (shiny rub marks), a torn braid on the flexible section, loose shields, stretched hangers. Assess the engine mounts while you are there.
  4. Listen to the exhaust. If it has become deeper or louder at the same time, corrosion has probably gone right through the system.

A separate case is a rattle under acceleration that appears only on a cold engine and disappears after five minutes. That is the signature of thermal clearance in the exhaust.

Why knocking cannot wait

If the checks point at knocking, the attitude to the noise changes completely. Explosive combustion creates shock waves that strike the pistons, the rings and the ring lands — the metal breaks away gradually and invisibly, and it ends in an engine rebuild.

The usual triggers are mundane: fuel with a lower octane rating than the engine needs, spark plugs of the wrong heat range, a thick layer of carbon in the combustion chambers, an engine overheating in traffic on a hot day. Modern engines defend themselves with a knock sensor — it hears the ringing and retards the ignition — but with a failed sensor or consistently poor fuel that defence does not save you. The practical conclusion: if ringing under load started after one particular fill-up, begin with a full tank of fuel you trust; if the sound persists, book a diagnosis and check the plugs rather than waiting for it to pass.

How the repair is decided

The order of work follows the cost of being wrong. Cheap mechanical causes come first: tightening a shield or clamping it takes minutes, and the same visit shows whether the pipe is rubbing anywhere. A torn flexible section is a defined job — but worth agreeing in advance whether it is being replaced as a section or the whole front pipe, because on many cars the flex is welded in and the choice affects both the price and how long the repair lasts.

Only if the exhaust is sound does the engine come into the picture: plugs, fuel, a scanner reading the knock sensor and ignition corrections. In most cases the matter closes on the first line, and the point of the inspection is to make sure this really is that case — and not knocking wearing the mask of a harmless rattle.
