A car sounds different in summer, and that catches people out: an interior that stayed quiet all spring suddenly starts ticking on a sunny car park and creaking over every joint in the road. With a dashboard reaching seventy degrees in direct sun, this is a seasonal norm for most cars. Here is what happens to the materials in the heat, which sounds will go on their own, and where the heat has merely revealed a loose fixing.

What heat does to materials

Plastic expands as it warms, and it expands unevenly. The top of the dashboard, dark and facing the sun, gains seventy degrees over an hour of parking while the same part underneath stays at forty. The difference in size is fractions of a millimetre, but the fixing was designed for a tight fit — so the part starts pressing on its neighbour. When the stress beats the friction, the plastic slips. That is the single tick you hear in an empty car on a car park.

In the evening the whole thing runs backwards: the cabin cools, the parts contract, and the ticking returns for an hour after sunset.

Heat treats rubber worse than frost does. Door seals lose plasticiser — the thing that keeps rubber soft — and slowly go hard. A fresh seal absorbs micro-impacts; a dried one passes them into the body as a creak. The same goes for trim clips: nylon softens in the heat, the clip loses its grip, and the panel gains freedom it never had.

Bonded joints are their own story. The double-sided tape that holds trim and sound deadening from the factory starts to flow at seventy degrees. It still holds, but the part floats on it a little, and a sound appears that was there neither in winter nor in spring.

The test is simple: a summer sound is tied to temperature. It shows up on a hot car and goes once the cabin has cooled. Anything audible on a cold car in the morning has nothing to do with the season — that is a loose fixing or a worn part, and the heat only made it easier to hear. What to do before the heat

The preparation takes half an hour and removes most summer creaks.

  1. Treat the rubber. Wipe the door and boot seals and go over them with silicone grease. In summer this is not about frozen doors but about keeping the plasticiser: a treated seal hardens far more slowly.
  2. Use a windscreen shade. The most effective single measure: it takes thirty degrees off the dashboard, and the evening ticking with them.
  3. Check the clips. Trim that sat tight in winter can move in summer. Run a palm along the panel joints and find the ones that answer.
  4. Clear the loose items. Coins in cubbies and unsecured luggage carry further in the heat: hot air in the cabin passes sound differently and a rattle seems louder.
  5. Look at the dashboard on its own. It is the most common source of a summer sound — a rattling dashboard.

What a summer check covers

Two things are worth knowing. A creak cured by silicone stays cured for a while: treating rubber is routine maintenance rather than a bodge, and doing it once a season is normal. And the opposite — if the sound survives both the treatment and the clip check, there is no point searching the cabin further. The source is outside, most often anti-roll bar links or a strut top mount, which soften in the heat and pass the sound into the body.

Telling a seasonal creak from a real one is easiest by comparison.
