A squeal or whistle in the first seconds after the engine catches almost always comes from the auxiliary belt — the rubber belt that drives the alternator, the water pump and the air-conditioning compressor. When cold or in damp weather the belt slips on the pulleys and squeals, and a few seconds later it warms up, dries out and goes quiet.

That scenario is not dangerous right now, but it should not be treated as normal either: a fresh, properly tensioned belt does not squeal even in frost. A regular morning squeal is a sign that the belt has aged, the tension has dropped or one of the pulleys it runs over is beginning to wear. A separate story is the sound of the start itself: grinding or whirring while the starter turns the engine. That is not the belt but the starter or the flywheel ring gear, and those should not be dragged out.

Can you keep driving

With a squeal that lives a few seconds after a cold start and then disappears completely you can drive: there is no direct threat. But it is worth having the belt looked at when convenient — the inspection takes a couple of minutes, and replacing the belt with its pulley is one of the cheaper jobs.

If the squeal has stopped going away with warmth, appears when the air conditioning comes on, or with every start it lasts longer and louder, book a garage within the week: a worn belt can snap, and without it the alternator stops, as does the water pump on many engines. If the battery light comes on or the temperature needle starts climbing — pull over and switch off.

Why does the engine squeal only when cold and in damp weather?

Cold, wet belt rubber grips the pulleys less well, so in the first seconds after a start it slips and squeals. As things warm up the grip returns and the sound goes. A new belt with a healthy tensioner copes with these conditions too, so a regular morning squeal is a reason for an inspection.

The squeal now appears on a warm engine too. Is that serious?

It is a sign that wear has reached the stage where the belt slips in ordinary conditions. You can still drive, but book a garage within the week: a snapped belt leaves you without an alternator and on many cars without a water pump, and the trip ends on a tow truck.

How is a squeal after starting different from grinding while starting?

Squealing and whistling appear after the engine has already fired, and the belt is usually to blame. Metallic grinding is heard earlier — in the seconds while the starter is turning the engine — and points to poor engagement between the starter pinion and the flywheel ring gear.
