There is no honest short answer to this question: everything depends on what exactly is knocking. Some sounds let you drive calmly to a workshop and even use the car for a week in a gentle regime; others turn every kilometre into a lottery with a rebuild as the stake. Below is how to put your knock into the “red” or “amber” zone in five minutes, the rules for driving if you decide to drive, and why a tow truck is often the cheapest line in the whole estimate.
The red zone: switch off and call a tow truck
There are combinations of signs where driving on is not acceptable no matter how far the workshop is:
- a dull knock from deep in the block that quickens with revs and grows under load — the signature of worn crankshaft bearings;
- any knock together with the oil pressure light — parts are knocking and there is nothing left to protect them;
- a knock after losing oil — a sump holed on a kerb or a track, a filter that has unseated, a fresh oil patch under the car;
- metallic grinding, a sharp loss of power, heavy vibration — signs that destruction is already under way.
The logic is simple: while the bearings are knocking, the repair is limited to replacing parts; after a spun bearing or a seized crankshaft it is a rebuild or a replacement engine. A tow across town is not comparable with the difference between those two repairs.
Nobody can say how many kilometres are “left” with red signs: there are cases of engines with knocking bearings covering a hundred kilometres, and cases of seizure after five. The amber zone: you can drive to a workshop
Most engine knocks do not require abandoning the car on the hard shoulder: in diagnosticians’ experience a large share of “frightening” sounds turn out to be the valvetrain, the accessories, or entirely normal operation. You can usually drive calmly to a diagnosis with:
- sharp ticking from the top — hydraulic lifters; unpleasant but not critical, and the checks are in how to check hydraulic lifters;
- even injector ticking on direct injection — normal rather than a fault; the symptom page is engine ticking;
- pinging under acceleration after refuelling — detonation on poor fuel; the first step is a different filling station and a look at the plugs, as set out in metallic pinging under acceleration;
- exhaust heat shield rattle and knocking from accessories — the source is outside the engine itself;
- a single thump when pulling away or changing gear — engine mounts.
“You can drive there” does not mean “you can forget about it”: the amber zone differs from the red one by having days and weeks for a diagnosis, not months. A useful habit in the meantime is to check the oil level every morning before starting and to note whether the sound is changing: a stable knock and a progressing knock are different degrees of urgency.

If you decide to drive: the gentle regime
When the knock has been placed in the amber zone and the decision to drive is made, there is one goal — not to let the problem move into the red zone on the way. All the rules below come down to keeping the load on the parts and the oil temperature minimal, and noticing any change at once:
- Check the oil level before starting and top up if needed — the main insurance policy for the trip.
- Keep the revs below 2,000–2,500, accelerate gently, no overtaking, towing or long climbs.
- Watch the oil pressure light and the temperature. If the light flickers, stop right there, not “at the next filling station”.
- Listen to the sound. A knock that grows noticeably as the engine warms or over the course of the drive is a reason to stop.
- Plan a short route — to the nearest workshop, not across town and certainly not to another city.
A separate caveat for long distances: if the knock appeared on a road where the nearest workshop is hundreds of kilometres away, the criteria tighten. What in town would mean a fifteen-minute drive to a garage becomes hours of loaded running in the heat. On a long trip any new knock is a reason to stop at the next fuel station, let the engine cool, check the oil level and judge soberly what is cheaper: waiting for a tow truck or risking the engine.
What not to do
Three typical mistakes that turn a cheap problem into an expensive one. Do not pour in additives or thickeners before a diagnosis — they mask the sound without removing the cause and stop the engine builder hearing the real picture. Do not rev the engine to the limiter hoping the knock will clear: with a lubrication problem that multiplies the wear. And do not put the diagnosis off for months even if the knock is stable: the cost at an early stage and at a late one differ by an order of magnitude.
