Dampers die quietly. There is no moment when something breaks with a bang: damping fades gradually, over tens of thousands of kilometres, and the driver has time to get used to a car that wallows and holds the road less well. That is why owners rarely complain about them — the diagnosis usually turns up at a routine inspection. Here are the signs you can catch without a test rig.

How the car behaves

The first and most honest symptom is wallowing. After a speed hump or a wave in the tarmac, the body should settle almost immediately. If it keeps rocking two or three times, the hydraulics are no longer absorbing the spring’s energy. The same applies in corners: the lean is deeper, and after a change of direction the car keeps leaning past where it should.

The second is bottoming out. A worn damper does not restrain suspension travel, and over medium potholes the suspension reaches the bump stop — you hear a dry impact where the same pothole used to be soft. The third is braking: the nose dips noticeably more, the stopping distance grows, and over bumps during braking the wheel starts to skip, so the ABS intervenes earlier than it should.

A separate marker is temperature. After a brisk drive a healthy damper is warm: it converts the energy of movement into heat. A damper that is cold next to the others usually means it is no longer working. It is a rough method, but on a lift it takes seconds.

A five-minute check by hand

Start with the bounce test on each corner: press on the wing with your weight and let go sharply. Count the movements — one or two is normal. Then inspect the bodies and gaiters and run a finger along the rod. After that, drive a familiar stretch with undulations at 60–80 km/h and see how quickly the body settles.

Compare the feel with the car loaded, too. Worn dampers almost always show themselves more with passengers and luggage: the suspension works closer to the bump stops, and bottoming out becomes audible over bumps an empty car took calmly.

If clicking or crunching appears when you turn the wheel while parked, the cause may not be the damper itself but the top mount. What it leads to, and how the repair is decided

Dead dampers are not only a comfort question. A wheel that bounces loses grip, and the stopping distance on uneven surfaces grows noticeably. The neighbours suffer as well: control arm bushes are destroyed, ball joints and wheel bearings fail sooner, and tyres wear unevenly.

The economics here are simple: taking a strut apart twice costs more than once. If the damper is coming off, assess the top mount, the bump stop and the gaiter at the same time — replacing them at that moment adds almost nothing to the bill, while doing them later means paying the same labour again.

Two further points belong in any estimate. Dampers go on in pairs across an axle. And wheel alignment afterwards is a required step rather than an option, because replacing struts changes the geometry.
