The top of a front strut is where the suspension meets the body. There sits a mount with a bearing that lets the whole strut rotate with the wheel when you turn the steering. The part is small and cheap, but its wear spoils how the car feels more than you would expect: clicking appears, the steering gets heavier, and over small bumps a knock develops that people stubbornly hunt for in the control arms.

What the wear sounds like

The most recognisable sign is clicking and crunching as you turn the wheel with the car parked. The sound comes from above, from the strut tower area near the windscreen, and is easily felt with a palm on the top of the wing. It often repeats cyclically: one click at each particular steering angle.

The second sign is knocking over small bumps, especially while making small steering corrections. A worn bearing gives vertical play, the strut shifts slightly in the mount, and a dull thump appears. The third is heavy, notchy steering: it stops returning to centre by itself after a turn, and parking feels like it is binding.

How to check it yourself

  1. Palm on the mount. Put a hand on the top of the wing above the strut and have a helper turn the steering slowly with the car parked. Crunching and clicking are felt more clearly than they are heard.
  2. The parked test. Rock the steering left and right through 30–40 degrees: if the sound follows the steering rather than the movement of the car, the running gear over bumps is not involved.
  3. The bounce. Push the wing up and down with your hand on the mount: a knock under your palm means vertical play.
  4. Compare sides. The same sound left and right is usually age-related wear in both mounts; a difference points to one problem side.

What it is most often confused with

The main neighbour by symptoms is the outer CV joint. A useful rule: a sound tied to the steering with the car stationary is the top of the strut or the steering. A sound tied to motion is the driveshafts and the running gear.

How the repair is decided

The main cost here is not the part but stripping the strut with spring compressors. That single fact drives every sensible decision about the job.

It is exactly why top mount bearings are almost always replaced together with the dampers: paying for the same labour twice is the classic regret here. For the same reason it makes sense to fit the bump stop and the dust boot at the same time — they cost little and live in the same assembly.

Two things to ask about. First, whether the alignment will be redone afterwards: stripping a strut disturbs the camber setting on many cars, and skipping it shows up as tyre wear a few thousand kilometres later. Second, whether the spring is going back in the same orientation — a spring seated wrongly on reassembly is a common source of a new knock that appears right after the repair.
