An oil change is the most common service operation, and a knock afterwards is a frequent complaint with a bitter aftertaste: you did the right thing and the engine started knocking. The good news: in most cases the link is either illusory or fixable cheaply — with the level, the filter or the viscosity. The bad: occasionally a knock after a change really does signal something serious. Here are the causes in order, from normal to the scenarios that mean going back.

The first start after a change: brief ticking is normal

During a change the oil is drained and the new filter goes on empty (on many engines it cannot be pre-filled). At the first start the pump needs a few seconds to fill the filter and the galleries — during which the hydraulic lifters run without pressure and tick.

Normal looks like this: ticking in the first 5–30 seconds after the first start, then silence; the oil pressure light goes out within a second or two. Viscosity. The most common real cause. A worn engine that ran for years on a thicker grade can knock when hot after a switch to a fashionable thin one: thin oil holds enlarged clearances less well. The reverse switch is a stress too: thick oil in frost takes longer to reach the lifters. The reference is the engine manufacturer’s specification, with an allowance for wear and climate.

Level. Underfilling risks oil starvation: the pump picks up air, the pressure sags, the lifters tick and in bad cases the crankshaft bearings knock. Overfilling is more insidious than it looks: the crankshaft whips the oil into foam, and foam pumps badly. A dipstick check on level ground takes a minute and removes half the questions — the wider list is in signs of low oil pressure.

The filter. A filter has an anti-drainback valve that keeps oil in the galleries while the car stands. On cheap filters it can be stiff or leaky — then the oil drains overnight and every morning starts with long ticking that was not there before the change.

Flushing. An aggressive flush on a high-mileage engine lifts deposits that can block the oil pick-up screen and the galleries. If the knock appeared after a change with a flush and is growing, that is a reason for a prompt diagnosis.

One nuance rarely mentioned is the method. With an extraction change the oil is drawn out through the dipstick tube, and more old oil and sediment can remain in the sump than with a classic drain through the plug. That is not a failure in itself, but if the engine is sensitive to oil and ticks, a gravity drain with the plug removed is wiser next time — and the mechanic gets to see whether there is swarf in the drained oil.

Coincidence, not cause

A separate scenario: the engine would have knocked without the change. The owner starts listening to the car after a service — and “hears” a sound that quietly lived there before. Beyond that, fresh oil sometimes honestly reveals wear that the older, thicker oil was masking. The character helps: ticking from above is the lifters and valves; a dull low knock from deep in the block is the bearings, and that cannot wait — signs of big-end bearing knock. The alarming companion of a knock is the oil pressure light, or its flicker at idle. That is no longer about sound but about pressure.

Step by step

  1. Check the level with the dipstick on level ground, engine cold. Top up or draw off as needed.
  2. Find the invoice and compare the oil that went in with the specification: viscosity, approval, quantity.
  3. Look at the parking spot and the filter. Weeping at the filter or the plug is a reason to go straight back.
  4. Judge the sound. Ticking from above only when cold — watch for a couple of days; a knock when hot, a dull knock from the block or the pressure light — do not drive, find the cause at once.
  5. Go back to where it was done. A decent workshop checks its own work free; the conversation is easier with recorded facts — a recording of the sound, a photo of the dipstick, the invoice.

Even a full second oil change costs less than any repair that driving with an unexplained knock leads to.
