After suspension work a car should be quieter than before it. If instead a new knock has appeared, there are exactly three versions: a fitting mistake, a faulty part, or a component that was not part of the job. Each version has its own signature and its own timescale, so “who is to blame” can usually be established before anything is dismantled. Here they are in order.

Version one: a fitting mistake

The most common error when replacing arms and bushes is tightening with the suspension hanging. A bush is a rubber sleeve that works in torsion: it must be tightened with the car on its wheels and the arms in their working position. If the fasteners were tightened on a lift with the wheels hanging, the rubber is permanently twisted, tears within one or two thousand kilometres — and the component knocks as though it had never been replaced. Other fitting causes: an under-tightened fastener (a knock from the first kilometres), tightening by feel without a torque wrench, forgotten washers and spacers. In the same category is a skipped alignment: it does not knock, but it gives itself away with the car pulling and angled tyre wear.

Version two: the part

Aftermarket shelves carry both fakes of well-known brands and outright no-name parts. They look identical, but their life differs several-fold: a counterfeit ball joint or track rod end can start knocking within 5,000–10,000 km even with perfect fitting.

The signature of this version: it is the replaced component that knocks, but not immediately — after thousands of kilometres — and the play is confirmed on a lift.

Version three: the repair has nothing to do with it

Suspensions wear as a set. While a broken arm was knocking, it masked its neighbours; after the replacement the car became more composed — and against the new quiet, the next component in line showed itself, most often the anti-roll bar links. Their signature is in signs of worn anti-roll bar links. Pure coincidence happens too: an undertray fastener that came loose a week after the repair rings metallically and is easily taken for a suspension knock — the difference is in metallic clatter under the car over bumps.

How to resolve it with the workshop

The first step is to go back to where the work was done, calmly and without accusations: labour usually carries a warranty, and a re-torque or reassembly under it is free. State the complaint specifically: where it knocks, at what speed, on which bumps, whether the sound has changed over time.

If the workshop insists everything is fine while the knock objectively exists, an independent diagnosis at another workshop gives you a written argument: which joint has play and whether it relates to the recent work. With the work order and that assessment the question is almost always resolved without conflict: a decent workshop finds it easier to redo the job than to argue.
