Clatter is not simply a knock but a ringing metallic rattle, as though a piece of iron were loose under the floor. Most often that is exactly what it is: what clatters is a part that has lost its mounting, not a worn loaded component. That is good news — most causes of clatter are cured by tightening fasteners for very little money. How clatter differs from a knock
A dull knock is the sound of an impact through rubber: that is how control arm bushes, dampers and mounts knock. Clatter is metal contacting metal with no damper in between. In a suspension, metal should not strike metal anywhere, so clatter immediately narrows the search to two scenarios: either something has come loose and is hanging (undertray, heat shield, exhaust), or a joint has worn dry — down to direct contact between metal parts. The simple causes: undertray, shields, exhaust
Top of the statistics is the undertray: the original bolts and clips get lost over time and the steel sheet starts jumping on every bump. Second are the exhaust heat shields: thin sheet metal corrodes around the fixing points and rattles both over bumps and at particular engine speeds — the search procedure is in finding a rattling heat shield. Third are the exhaust hanger rubbers: stretched rubber rings let the silencer swing and ring against the body.
All of this is checked by hand on a cold car: rock the undertray, tug the exhaust, tap the shields with your palm. The rattle you find is audible immediately.
When it is the suspension that clatters

Of the suspension parts, the ones that most often survive to a genuine metallic clatter are the anti-roll bar links: when the plastic insert in the joint is completely worn away, the pin flops in its housing and rings on every bump. How to check in five minutes
- Cabin and boot. Take out the jack, the tools and anything that can rattle — and drive the same stretch again.
- Blip the throttle while parked. If the clatter is audible as the revs rise with the car standing still, the exhaust or a shield is to blame and the suspension has nothing to do with it.
- Hands. With the car cold, rock the undertray, the exhaust and any visible shields.
- A helper. Rock the car by a wing — a clatter at a wheel points to the anti-roll bar.

How the repair is decided
Most of the work here is fasteners rather than parts, and that changes what to ask for. If the undertray fixings have pulled out, the honest fix is new clips and, where the mounting point is torn, a repair washer or a bracket — not one bolt through the remaining hole, which tears out again within a month. If the heat shield has corroded around a fixing, a large washer over the sound metal holds; a shield that has lost half its perimeter is replaced rather than patched.
Ask which of the two you are getting. A workshop that says only “we tightened it up” has not told you whether the fastener is now holding on sound metal or on what was left of it.
There is not much danger in clatter itself, but two scenarios are worth not leaving: a loose undertray can tear off at speed, and a swinging silencer pulls off its remaining hangers and hangs on the pipe.
