The short answer: it depends on what is knocking. The same “knock in the suspension” can mean a cheap anti-roll bar bush you can happily drive on until a scheduled visit — or a ball joint with a folded wheel ahead of it. The driver’s job is not to make an exact diagnosis but to judge the urgency correctly. For that it is enough to know which parts tolerate neglect, which do not, and how they sound.

What is relatively tolerant
The anti-roll bar — the springy bar that reduces body roll — is the most harmless source of knock. Its links and bushes give a frequent dull knock over fine ripples and speed humps. Control arm bushes and dampers are the “not for long” category. A worn damper does not keep the wheel on the road: the stopping distance grows, the car floats, and every impact goes into the bushes and the wheel bearings. What is not tolerant
The ball joint is the pivot that both holds and steers the wheel. Its play grows unpredictably: from the first knock to failure can be six months or one good pothole. The ending is always the same — the pin comes out of its housing and the wheel folds under. At parking speed that is a tow truck and a bent wing; on a motorway it is loss of control. Track rod ends and rods follow the same logic: play in the steering is no longer a noise but a direct risk. The signs are a knock over small bumps felt through the wheel, play in the steering, and the car wandering in a straight line. The check is in checking track rod ends for play.

Judging urgency by sound
- frequent small knocking over ripples, unchanged in turns — the anti-roll bar signature: repair as planned, within the month;
- single dull thumps over potholes — damper or control arm bushes: diagnosis within a week or two;
- a knock that changes in turns, or comes with a creak as you steer — ball joint suspected: workshop within days, drive gently;
- a knock felt through the steering wheel, or steering play — the steering: same again, and no speed;
- any knock that has suddenly got louder — urgent: fast growth means fast wear.

What definitely not to do
Do not drown the knock out with music — sound is the only free condition sensor the suspension has. Do not replace parts “on suspicion” without checking for play: that way half the running gear gets renewed and the thing knocking turns out to be the undertray. And do not put the diagnosis off until the next service if the sound changes from week to week: a stable knock can wait, a growing one cannot.
