Metallic noise from below is a genre with almost always two suspects: the exhaust system and the undertray — the steel or composite panel under the engine. They sound similar — rattling, clattering, a dull knock over bumps — but their origins differ, and they can be separated without a lift, in one drive and a couple of minutes in a car park. Here is what each source reacts to and what to do next.

Why they sound alike

Both the undertray and the exhaust are large metal parts hung under the body at a few mounting points. While the fasteners are sound, both are rigidly fixed and silent. As soon as free movement appears — a stripped thread, a split exhaust hanger rubber, a broken undertray screw — the part starts touching the body or its neighbours. Hence the shared character of the sound: not a ringing metal-on-metal note but a dull clatter with a “something is loose” quality.

The difference is in what makes the part move. The undertray is shaken by road bumps — pure suspension and body mechanics. The exhaust is shaken not only by bumps but by engine vibration: the manifold is rigidly attached to the cylinder head, and any change of revs travels down the whole system to the silencer.

The checks that settle it

  1. The idle test. Start the engine and, from neutral, raise the revs smoothly to 2,500–3,000. If the rattle appears or changes tone, it is the exhaust or a heat shield. Silence means almost certainly the undertray.
  2. The rocking test. With the car parked, rock the body by a wing, then slam a door. A clatter means a loose panel or a component hanging on a broken fixing.
  3. The hands test. On a fully cold car, get underneath and tug in turn at the silencer, the flex pipe, the shields and the edge of the undertray. More than a centimetre of movement anywhere is already a cause.
  4. The surface test. Fine washboard surfaces bring out the undertray; smooth tarmac under load brings out the exhaust.

Heat shields deserve their own row. Formally part of the exhaust system, they behave by its rules but cost almost nothing to fix: a shield is secured with a clamp or a large washer. Before agreeing to a new silencer, ask for them to be checked — finding a rattling heat shield covers how. How the repair is decided

Undertray fixings are consumables: clips and screws cost very little, and almost any workshop supplies them as part of a tightening job. The question worth asking is whether the mounting point itself is intact — a fixing that has torn out of a bracket needs a repair washer or a new bracket, not one more screw through the remaining hole.

On the exhaust side, ask whether the hangers were checked: a system that sags on perished rubber rattles against the body no matter how well the clamps are tightened, and it also shortens the life of the next silencer.
