The wheel bearing is the part the wheel turns on. It works under the weight of the car for thousands of kilometres with no servicing, and as it wears it almost always warns you honestly with sound long before there is real danger. What a worn bearing sounds like
The classic sound is an even low hum that grows with speed. It is often compared to an aircraft taking off. The key differences from other noises:
- the hum follows road speed, not engine revs: coasting in neutral it does not go away;
- it barely depends on the surface — the same on new and coarse tarmac (unlike tyre noise);
- it changes in gentle curves at speed: quieter one way, louder the other.

How to check it yourself
Three tests that need no lift:
- The surface test. Drive one stretch over different tarmac. If the hum is unchanged, a bearing is likely; if it goes quieter on smooth surfaces, tyres are more likely.
- The lane-change test. On an empty road at 60–80 km/h, ease smoothly in both directions. A hum that quietens turning right and grows turning left means the right side is loaded and the right bearing is the suspect, and vice versa.
- The coasting test. Accelerate to the speed where the hum is audible and coast in neutral. If it remains, the source turns with the wheels and the engine is not involved.

Why bearings wear out early
The design life is around 100,000–150,000 km, but in practice the spread is huge. The main accelerators:
- Pothole and kerb strikes. A brief shock load leaves micro-dents on the raceways, and the failure grows from there. One hard hit at speed can start a hum even on a fresh bearing.
- Water and dirt. Deep puddles and pressure-washing right at the hub force grease out and drive moisture past the seal. Corroded raceways are the second most common cause of an early death.
- Non-standard wheels. Larger wheels with low-profile tyres and spacers increase the leverage — the bearing works in a regime it was not designed for.
- Incorrect tightening. A hub nut over-tightened during a repair, or fitted without a torque wrench, kills a new bearing within a few thousand kilometres. So it matters that the workshop works to a torque figure rather than by feel.
The practical conclusion: if the car recently caught a pothole and a hum appeared a week or two later, the connection is almost certainly direct.
Front or rear: is there a difference
Front bearings are more heavily loaded — they carry the engine’s weight and the steering forces — so statistically the front ones hum more often. But rear ones are trickier to diagnose: a hum at the back on rear- or four-wheel-drive cars is easily confused with a differential whine or a propshaft centre bearing. If the hum is clearly at the back, ask the mechanic to check the driveline as well — the same few minutes on a lift. How the repair is decided
Two things govern the job: whether your car takes a separate bearing pressed into the knuckle or a complete hub unit, and the hub nut torque. The first decides the price and the tooling; the second decides how long the new part lasts. There is no need to replace them in pairs — only the worn one.
One thing workshops do not always mention: on many modern cars the ABS sensor ring is part of the bearing, and it has a magnetic encoder that is ruined by careless handling or by fitting the bearing the wrong way round. An ABS light that appears right after a bearing replacement is almost always that.
What ignoring it leads to
A bearing fails progressively: hum, rumble, play, cage failure. In the final stage the wheel goes out of true, wears the tyre, heats the hub and can seize on the move. That is usually a long way off — but there is no point reaching it: the longer a broken bearing runs, the higher the chance its seat is damaged and the hub or the whole knuckle has to be replaced instead.
