A wheel bearing almost never fails suddenly. It travels a long road from a barely audible hum on the motorway to a growl no music can cover, and it sounds different at every stage. If you know the sequence you can work out fairly precisely where you are now — and how much time is left before putting it off stops being an option.
Stage one: a hum you only hear on the motorway
It starts as a quiet, even hum, like winter tyres on dry tarmac. It appears from around 50–60 km/h, grows with speed and does not follow engine revs. At this point people usually blame the tyres — and that is the main trap: a bearing and a tyre sound similar but react to the road differently.
Separating them is simple. Drive over sections with different surfaces: noisy tyres change their voice with the tarmac, a bearing hums the same everywhere. Then ease smoothly left and right at 60–80 km/h. In a curve the weight shifts outwards and the loaded worn bearing hums louder. Stage two: the hum grows teeth
Next, structure appears in the sound. The even “ooooo” turns into a pulsing hum with an overtone, as though something were rolling round and round. The reason is clear: the raceways have started to spall, the balls or rollers pass over damaged patches, and every pass is audible. The hum is now noticeable in town too, at 40–50 km/h, not only on the motorway.
This is also usually where the coasting reaction first shows: if you coast in neutral the sound does not disappear, because the source rotates with the wheels rather than with the engine. That is an important difference from transmission noise.
At this stage the bearing is also confidently identified on a raised wheel: spin it by hand and hold a screwdriver or a pry bar against the strut, and you hear a distinct rough rustle that the healthy side does not have. You can still drive like this for a while, but it is the last calm stage — after it wear accelerates, because the ruined raceways break up whatever is left of them.
Stage three: rumble, vibration, play

Any of the last three means the observation period is over. Beyond it lies the risk of the bearing seizing or the hub failing on the move, and that is no longer about comfort but about safety.
What gets mistaken for a bearing
Not every hum at the front is a hub. Knocking and rattling over bumps far more often comes from the anti-roll bar links. Vague behaviour in ruts, wandering and dull thumps are the typical picture of worn control arm bushes. How the repair is decided
Two things govern the job. First, whether your car takes a bearing pressed into the existing hub or a complete hub assembly replaced as a unit: that decides the time, the tooling and often whether the ABS sensor comes with it. Second, the hub nut torque — over- or under-tightening kills a new bearing within a few thousand kilometres, so a torque wrench rather than an impact gun is what you want to see being used.
There is no need to replace bearings in pairs, but it is worth asking for the other side to be checked on the lift while the car is up: if it is also near the end you can plan the work instead of meeting it in a month. And if the hum came with vibration, ask for the wheel to be balanced afterwards — a failing bearing often disguises an unbalanced wheel, and the vibration that remains after the repair surprises people.
