An automatic gearbox should shift imperceptibly — ideally the driver only learns about a gear change from the revs dropping. When instead there is a jolt in the back and a dull clunk somewhere under the floor, it is always worth investigating. But not always worth panicking about: some causes are cured by replacing a mount in a couple of hours, some really do mean opening the gearbox. Here is how to tell them apart.
What exactly clunks during a shift
A jolt and a clunk are different things, and it helps to separate them. A jolt is a jerk you feel through your body: the gearbox takes up or drops the torque abruptly. A clunk is the sound of an impact, usually metallic or dull, arriving from under the floor or the bulkhead.
They often come as a pair, and the connection is direct. The gearbox passes the torque jerk into the power unit, the unit rocks on its mounts — and if they are worn, it hits its limiters. So the source of the jerk is inside the gearbox and the source of the clunk is outside it. That is exactly why a diagnosis starts with the mounts: they are cheaper, more accessible and wear noticeably faster than a valve body — signs of worn engine mounts.
The order of checks, from simple to complex
- Engine and gearbox mounts. With the car stationary and the brake applied, shift from D to R and back. A sharp clunk through the body with a mild jerk almost certainly means the mounts — checking engine mounts under load.
- Fluid level and colour. Dark fluid smelling of burning, and a level below the mark, explain half of all late and harsh engagements.
- Cold and warm gearbox. Jolts only when cold are usually the hydraulics and fluid viscosity. Jolts on a warm gearbox are more serious.
- A scan tool. Fault codes for the solenoids and speed sensors often produce exactly the picture that feels like a clunk.
A manual gearbox behaves differently with similar symptoms, and the search logic there is its own — it is covered in a knock when changing gear. If the clunk is heard not at the moment of a shift but under acceleration generally, it is more useful to start with the symptom page knocking when accelerating and with a driveline clunk on and off the throttle.

The last two rows are a reminder that not everything clunking near the moment of a shift belongs to the gearbox. The coincidence in timing can be accidental: a hum you attribute to the transmission often turns out to be the tyres, and separating them is covered in humming: wheel bearing or tyres. How the repair is decided
The order above is the decision procedure, and it is deliberately built from the cheap and reversible to the expensive and irreversible. Mounts and fluid first, scan tool second, the inside of the gearbox last. Valve body work and a rebuild are left out of any estimate on purpose: the spread is too wide, and a figure quoted without a diagnosis of your specific gearbox is false precision.
It is also worth budgeting time for observation. An automatic is the one unit where rushing into a repair costs more than a couple of weeks of careful driving with notes: many adaptive gearboxes change their behaviour after an adaptation reset or a fluid change not immediately but over several hundred kilometres. So mechanics usually ask you to come back for a second diagnosis, and that is not an attempt to stretch the bill.
Two things mechanics do not always say. The fluid specification matters more than the brand — the wrong friction modifier gives exactly the harsh shifts you are trying to cure, so ask which specification is going in. And if a fluid change is refused at high mileage, that is usually caution rather than laziness: fresh fluid washes deposits that were holding worn-out clutches together.
