A knock arriving from the side — as if someone were tapping lightly from inside the door — is one of the most deceptive faults. The owner usually drives off to have the suspension checked, hears “everything is fine” from the mechanic, and is left with the sound. Yet the source is almost always in the door itself: the window regulator mechanism, the check strap and the latch all live in there, and each of them is capable of hitting metal on every bump.
The three main sources of a door knock
The window regulator. The commonest cause. The mechanism hangs inside the door on its runs and holds the glass by a frame or clamps. Over time the cable stretches, the rollers wear, the glass clamps loosen — and the glass together with the mechanism gains a few millimetres of freedom. The door check strap. The metal arm that holds the door at its intermediate positions. Its pin and bush wear, the door gains fore-and-aft play and taps at the leading edge over bumps. That knock comes with a characteristic companion sign: the door now closes with a different sound, and no longer holds firmly when open.
The latch and its striker. The striker on the body pillar wears or shifts, and the door no longer sits tightly. The knock here is dull, closer to the trailing edge of the door, often heard together with a light rattle from the glass.
Localising it in one drive

The last item is the most important. If the sound is reproduced by bouncing the stationary car, the door has nothing to do with it: most likely an anti-roll bar link or a damper is knocking and the body is simply conducting the sound into the cabin. What you can do yourself
Taking the door card off most mass-market models is a twenty-minute job: a few screws under caps and plastic clips around the edge. Inside, three things are worth checking: the tightness of the bolts holding the glass to the carrier, the state of the mechanism’s rollers and cables, and whether the factory rubber dampers are present on the inner panel. Often it is enough to tighten the glass fixing and add a piece of felt where the mechanism touches metal.
The check strap is cured by greasing the pin and bush; if the play is noticeable the part is replaced complete, and it is not expensive. The latch striker is adjusted by moving it: slacken the screws, shift it slightly, tighten and check how the door sits.

How the repair is decided
There is rarely a price list for door mechanisms — the work is charged by time, so the decision turns on what the checks found rather than on parts. The order is the cheap and reversible first: tighten the glass fixing, grease the check strap, adjust the striker. Only if the play stays does the regulator get replaced, and on many cars it comes as a module with the motor.
Two things mechanics do not always say. If several doors knock at once, check the suspension first — that coincidence is unlikely, and the body is probably just conducting the sound. And if a knock returns a few weeks after the door card has been off, the usual culprit is a clip or a missing foam pad rather than the mechanism: ask for the factory dampers to be put back rather than left in the bin.
If a hum or a whine unrelated to bumps has joined the knock, the source is worth looking for in the transmission — can you drive with a whining gearbox.
