A whine from the gearbox is a sound that rarely forces you to stop immediately, but it almost always means the unit is already wearing itself out. The question is usually not “drive or not drive” but “how much is left and what happens at the end”. The answer depends on which part is speaking up and how the sound behaves as you change gear and press the clutch. Here it is in order.
What actually whines inside a gearbox
In a manual gearbox there are not many sources of whine. Most often it is the shaft bearings: the raceways wear, the clearance grows, and rotation turns into an even high note tied to shaft speed. The second candidate is gear teeth with a worn profile; that whine is heard in one particular gear and disappears when you change to the next. The third is the release bearing, but it only shows up with the clutch pedal down — see a whine with the clutch pressed.
An automatic whines differently: there the source is usually the valve body pump or worn differential bearings. The giveaway is that the sound depends on the operating mode and the oil temperature, not only on speed — the early signs are in early signs of automatic transmission whine.
The general logic: if the whine changes as you change gear, the problem is inside the gearbox; if it is the same in every gear and in neutral while rolling, check the wheel bearings and driveshafts. The key divider is a second sound appearing on top of the first. While the whine is alone and even, the gearbox is wearing predictably. As soon as a thump, a crunch or grinding joins it, there is metal in the oil, and that metal accelerates the wear of everything else — the process turns into an avalanche. Reducing the risk while you drive
Check the oil level and condition: it is the cheapest action with a real effect. A low level, or oil of the wrong viscosity, turns moderate wear into fast wear.
Then the driving regime. High revs and hard acceleration are bad for a whining gearbox: the load on a worn bearing grows non-linearly. Calm driving with early upshifts noticeably extends its life. It is also worth avoiding towing a trailer and long loaded climbs. And keep the cost of a tow in mind: if the sound changes sharply, calling one out is cheaper than driving on to the point of destruction.
How the repair is decided
The exact price is named after the box is opened, but the decision has a structure worth knowing before you get a quote.
The first question is whether the noise is inside the gearbox at all. A whining centre bearing on a propshaft, a worn CV joint or a wheel bearing all get blamed on the gearbox, and each of them is a fraction of the cost. Ask what was checked before the box was quoted.
The second is what comes out with it. If the gearbox has to come off, the clutch, the release bearing and the rear main seal are reachable and the labour is already paid for; refusing them and doing the same job again in a year is the classic false economy here. On an automatic the equivalent question is the oil and the filter, and whether the pan will be opened to look for swarf — the answer to “is this a repair or a rebuild” is usually lying in the pan.
The third is metal in the oil. Once it is there, replacing a single bearing rarely ends the story, because the debris has been circulating through everything. That is exactly why a whine caught early costs a fraction of the same whine caught late.
