An even whine from under the bonnet that grows with engine revs and ignores road speed is the typical voice of a worn water pump bearing. The part is small and not expensive, but the answer to “how long can I keep driving” depends not on the pump itself but on what drives it. On some engines a whining pump is a reason to calmly book a workshop; on others it is a job for the coming weeks.
Why a pump starts to whine
The pump circulates coolant and turns constantly while the engine runs. Its shaft rides on a bearing, and a seal separates that bearing from the coolant. When the seal starts to pass, coolant washes the grease out, the raceways corrode — and the bearing begins to howl. The second scenario is the reverse: the bearing wears with age, the shaft develops play, and the play then destroys the seal.
Hence two companions of the whine worth checking straight away: whitish or coloured stains at the pump’s weep hole, and a falling coolant level in the expansion tank. If they are there, the part is at its final stage.
There is a third scenario, seen after a poorly done repair: an over-tightened accessory belt. Excess tension overloads the pump bearing, and a new part starts whining within a few thousand kilometres. So if the whine appeared soon after a belt change, check the tension first, not the pump.

How to check the pump without dismantling

- Take the accessory belt off (if the pump runs on it) and turn the pulley by hand. Roughness, crunching or noticeable play is a verdict.
- Check the weep hole at the bottom of the housing: coolant stains mean the seal has already given up.

How the repair is decided
The first question is what else comes out with the pump. If the pump is driven by the timing belt, the belt, the idlers and the tensioner are already off, and replacing them at the same time costs a fraction of doing it separately later; refusing the kit and keeping only the pump saves money today and spends it twice within a year or two. Ask what is in the kit being quoted.
The second is the coolant. Any pump job drains the system, so the coolant goes back in either as fresh fluid of the correct specification or as the old fluid strained back in. Mixing coolant types is a genuine cause of corrosion and of a new pump failing early, so it is worth asking which fluid is going in and whether the system will be bled properly — an air lock after the job shows up as an overheating gauge a week later.
The third is that a whine is not the only reason to change a pump. A weeping seal with no noise at all is just as much a reason, because that is the leak that empties the system on a motorway.
