The first drive at minus twenty turns a familiar car into an unfamiliar one: the interior answers every joint in the tarmac with a creak, the door clicks as it closes, and the dashboard produces sounds it never made in summer. In hard winters that is a seasonal norm for most cars. Here is what actually changes in the cold, which sounds will clear by themselves, and where the frost has merely revealed a real fault.

What frost does to materials

The plastic the interior panels are made of contracts as it cools and noticeably loses elasticity. Parts that sat tightly in their clips in summer gain a few tenths of a millimetre of freedom in winter — and start moving relative to each other over bumps. Where in summer there was a soft springy contact, in winter there is dry hard contact, and that is a creak.

The same happens to rubber, only more so. Door and window seals stiffen, lose their ability to absorb micro-impacts and begin creaking as the body flexes. Suspension bushes — the rubber sleeves that damp vibration — are stiffer in the cold too, and the arm passes more high-frequency sound into the body.

A separate factor is moisture. Condensation that got into a panel joint in autumn freezes in winter, and ice in a gap acts as a wedge: the parts move apart, the fixing loosens, and after the first thaw a creak appears that was not there before.

A simple criterion: a winter sound disappears as things warm and does not appear on a warm car. Anything that lives after warm-up has nothing to do with the season. What to do before the cold

The preparation takes half an hour and removes most winter creaks.

  1. Treat the rubber. Wipe the door and boot seals dry and apply silicone grease. That saves you from creaking and from frozen doors.
  2. Grease the door mechanicals. Locks, hinges and check straps are exactly what click and creak when opened in frost.
  3. Dry the cabin. Wet mats in winter become a source of condensation that settles in the panel joints.
  4. Remove the loose items. Coins in cubbies and unsecured luggage rattle louder in the cold: the suspension is stiffer and sound is sharper in cold air.
  5. Check the fixings. Loose trim clips are silent in summer and not in winter; the dashboard is worth a look at the same time — a rattling dashboard.

What a winter check covers

Before the season, the sensible list is a suspension inspection on a lift, attention to the anti-roll bar bushes — a frequent source of a winter creak from below — and a look at the underbody fasteners and shields. If a damper has started knocking in the cold, that is its own job.

Two things worth knowing. Rubber components that creak only in frost are often serviceable rather than dead — greasing anti-roll bar bushes with silicone before winter is a legitimate fix, not a bodge. And a damper that knocks only in the cold is a different matter: cold oil is thicker, and a damper whose valving is worn shows it first at low temperatures, so a winter knock from a strut is worth taking seriously rather than waiting for spring.

Telling a seasonal creak from a real one is easiest by comparison.
