One quiet clunk at the moment you move off and another as you stop is a complaint workshops hear constantly. The sound is annoying in its regularity, yet the car can be perfectly quiet over bumps. That is an important clue: what is knocking is not the suspension in the classic sense but some component whose play shifts when the direction of force changes. Here is where to look for it.
Why the sound is single
When you pull away, drive presses every part with a clearance one way; when you brake, the other way. If there is free movement somewhere, it is taken up once — with a short thump. After that the parts stay pressed and the sound does not repeat until the direction of force changes again. So the clunk is heard strictly when moving off, stopping and shifting between drive and reverse — and almost never in the middle of steady driving.
Brakes: the most common cause
Top of the statistics is the pads shifting in the caliper. Pads sit in the carrier’s guides with a small clearance; when the direction of disc rotation changes they slide to the stop and click. Over time the clearance grows: the guides wear, the anti-rattle shims — the spring plates that hold the pad — are lost or flatten. The sound gets louder and starts appearing over small bumps too.
The check takes a minute: shuttle between drive and reverse a few times while parked and the clunk repeats; pull away with the brake held lightly and it disappears. Driveline, mounts and suspension
If the brake test gives nothing, the circle widens:
- engine and gearbox mounts — the rubber blocks the powertrain hangs on. A worn mount lets the engine rock when you pull away with a dull thump; the same knock is heard on gear changes and sharp throttle — see knocking when accelerating and the load test in checking engine mounts under load;
- propshaft universal joints and splines on rear- and four-wheel-drive cars — a metallic clunk from below, under the tunnel;
- trailing arm bushes — less often: they usually knock over potholes as well;
- loose wheel bolts — rare, but compulsory to check.

How the repair is decided
Work from cheap to expensive: wheel bolts, then the calipers, and only then the mounts and driveline. That order is not just about money — it is about not replacing a mount because of a pad that costs nothing to shim.
Two things are worth insisting on with brakes. First, that the slide pins are actually stripped, cleaned and re-greased with the correct high temperature grease rather than “looked at” — dry pins are the single most common reason the clunk comes back a month later. Second, that new anti-rattle shims go in with the pads; they are usually included in a decent pad set and often left in the box.
With mounts, the question to ask is which one was found to be moving and how. A mount is judged under load, with someone applying drive against the brake while the engine bay is watched — not by eye with the engine off.
If the clunk appeared after a repair or in the cold
Two special cases. First: the clunk appeared right after suspension or brake work — then go back to the same workshop for a re-torque, which is normal practice. Second: the sound only lives in cold weather and goes after warm-up — stiffened rubber in mounts and joints is to blame.
