On a winter morning an automatic behaves differently: the gearbox hums at idle, shifts are felt as jolts, a dull thump is heard when pulling away, and a few kilometres later all of it quietly goes. For an owner that is an annual cause for concern — and in most cases the concern is excessive. Here is which cold sounds are explained by the physics of the fluid and which remain a symptom after warm-up.

Why a cold gearbox sounds louder

An automatic transmission works on fluid that simultaneously transmits pressure, lubricates and cools. Below freezing that fluid becomes noticeably thicker. The pump has to force a viscous liquid through the narrow channels of the valve body — hence the higher pitch of the hum and the increased noise at idle. Pressure builds more slowly, the clutches engage less smoothly, and shifts feel harsher.

The second factor is thermal clearances. Metal parts are contracted more in the cold than in their working range, and some joints have slightly more play. So a single dull thump when moving the selector from P to D is more noticeable in winter than in summer. As things warm the fluid thins, the clearances reach their design values, and the unit goes quiet.

The key criterion is warm-up. Everything that goes with temperature belongs to fluid viscosity. Everything that remains on a hot gearbox belongs to the condition of the unit and calls for a diagnosis. Not confusing the gearbox with its neighbours

In winter a great deal gets louder, and some sounds are wrongly attributed to the automatic. A simple check takes one drive: if the noise is the same at any speed and changes only with engine revs, look towards the power unit; if it grows with speed regardless of gear, look towards the running gear — the method is set out in the sound changes when you select neutral.

What to do and how the decision is made

The practical winter programme is short. Do not push the first few kilometres: keep the revs calm and avoid hard starts until the fluid has warmed. Do not leave the gearbox in D with the brake held for long periods in frost. And once a season check the level and condition of the fluid — darkened fluid with a burnt smell explains a good half of the “winter” complaints that in fact stopped being seasonal long ago.

A fluid change does not cure a worn unit, but it often removes some of the noise and jolting if the fluid has not been changed for a long time. What decides whether to do it is mileage and the fluid’s condition rather than the calendar — and at high mileage with clutches already worn, a change can make things worse, which is why the decision follows a diagnosis rather than preceding it.

Two things mechanics do not always say. The fluid specification matters more than the brand: the wrong friction modifier produces exactly the harsh shifts you were trying to cure. And adaptive gearboxes change their behaviour after a fluid change or an adaptation reset not immediately but over several hundred kilometres — so a request to come back for a second check is normal practice, not an attempt to stretch the bill.
