The car comes back from a tyre change — and a knock has appeared that was not there in the morning. A familiar story, especially in the seasonal changeover. Most often the cause really is wheel-related and is fixed in minutes, but sometimes the tyre change merely coincides with suspension wear or makes it audible. Here are the causes from common to rare, starting with the one that must be ruled out immediately.
First: the wheel bolts
Under-tightened fasteners are the most common and simultaneously the most dangerous cause of a knock after a wheel change. It sounds like a metallic knock or clicks when pulling away, braking and over bumps; sometimes steering wheel vibration joins in. There is nothing to wait for: stop and check the torque on all the wheels — with the brace from the car’s tool kit or at the nearest tyre shop.
Correct tightening is done with a torque wrench: for most cars that is around 100–130 Nm, with the exact figure in the handbook. The check re-torque after 50–100 km matters too: the wheel beds onto the hub and the torque can drop even after an honest tightening. Driving on loose bolts damages the rim’s tapered holes and the studs, and in the extreme case ends with a lost wheel — which is why that check always comes first.
The opposite mistake happens too: over-tightening with an impact gun stretches the studs and warps the brake disc. It does not usually knock, but if judder under braking appeared after a tyre change, remember whether the wheels were done with an impact gun and no torque wrench.
The common causes

Fasteners and centring deserve their own mention. If the wheels were changed along with the rims, a knock and vibration can come from the wrong fasteners: bolts with a different seat, missing centring rings, locking bolts not fully tightened. Check that the same day.
Knock, vibration or hum are different complaints
Words matter, because they lead to different culprits:
- a knock — short impacts over bumps or during manoeuvres: fasteners, objects in the wheel, suspension;
- vibration — shaking of the wheel or body in a narrow speed band: balancing, rim geometry, a tyre bulge;
- a hum — an even sound growing with speed: tread pattern and wear, less often a wheel bearing.

What to check yourself in 15 minutes
- Re-torque. All bolts on all wheels, crosswise. No brace — any tyre shop does it in minutes and usually free.
- Inspect the tread. Stones in the grooves, screws, nail heads. Prise the stone out and the clicking stops at once.
- Trim covers. Take them off and shake them out: a detached weight, a pebble or a forgotten nut rattles there.
- A look behind the rim. Stones between the rim and the caliper, or an inner arch liner caught during fitting — a torch and a couple of minutes are enough.
- A control drive. The same route: when does it knock — over small bumps, under braking, in corners? That link narrows the search sharply and is useful to the mechanic.
One more thing to check after a changeover is the boot. An unsecured spare, the jack or a bag of removed fasteners knock dully over bumps and convincingly imitate “a knock in the rear suspension”. It sounds like a joke, but such finds turn up regularly.
When the tyre shop is not to blame
Lifting the car and swapping wheels is the moment the suspension is heard anew. A new set is quieter than a worn one, and against that quiet a knock that existed for a long time becomes noticeable.
