A knock that comes straight into your palms on a broken road is one of the commonest reasons to book a diagnosis. The good news is that the circle of suspects is short: there are only a few parts between the driver’s hands and the wheel, and the source is almost always among them. The key is to separate genuine feedback into the hands from a knock that is merely heard at the front: those are two different lists of causes. Here are the culprits by frequency and the checks that need no lift.
Why the knock reaches your hands
The steering wheel is connected to the road wheels almost rigidly. The steering shaft turns the rack pinion, the rack moves the tie rods, and the rods turn the hubs through the track rod ends. There is a minimum of rubber in that chain to absorb impacts, so any play — an enlarged clearance in a joint or in the rack’s mesh — turns into an impact on potholes that reaches your palms almost undiminished.
Suspension parts are arranged differently: anti-roll bar links and bushes, ball joints and arm bushes are mounted through rubber and knock into the body. That knock is heard under the car or felt through the floor, while the wheel stays calm. Hence the first question of self-diagnosis: do your hands feel the impact, or does the sound simply arrive from the front? The main causes by frequency

Statistically the joints are most often to blame — the ends and the rods: they take the impacts from the wheels first and work in the harshest environment, next to dirt and water. The rack is second by frequency but first by the cost of getting it wrong: repairing it costs several times more than replacing an end, so it matters not to miss the diagnosis. The weather offers a useful observation too. Rubber bushes stiffen in frost, so in winter the anti-roll bar knocks sound louder and drier, while play in the steering joints barely depends on temperature. A sound that grew sharply with the cold argues for the suspension rubber rather than the rack or the ends — suspension knock in cold weather.
Narrowing it down in ten minutes
- Rocking the wheel while parked. Start the engine and rock the wheel left and right through 10–15 degrees in short movements. A helper puts a hand first on the track rod end, then on the tie rod, then on the rack housing: the impact is felt through the palm in exactly the part that has play.
- Locating the sound. A knock “in the wheel itself” and in the column means the rack or the steering shaft universal joint; a knock from below, at the wheel, means an end or a rod; a crunch from above, under the bonnet at the strut tower, means the top mount bearing.
- Checking the play. With the car parked, free movement at the rim of more than two or three centimetres is a sign of worn joints or clearance in the rack.
- Checking with the wheel raised. If you have a jack, raise a front wheel and rock it by hand at 9 and 3 o’clock. Play and knocking in that plane means the steering joints; play at 6 and 12 points at the hub or the ball joint — checking track rod ends for play.

How the repair is decided
The cheapest part on the list is the anti-roll bar link, the most expensive is the rack — so locating the source precisely is worth more than replacing parts in turn and hoping. If a workshop proposes replacing several parts at once “as prevention”, ask to be shown the play in each of them on the lift; conscientious mechanics do that without objection.
Two things worth planning for. An alignment after replacing ends or rods is compulsory, not optional: without it a new part eats a set of tyres quickly. And on the rack, ask whether the adjuster still has travel before agreeing to an adjustment — one already at its limit means the answer is a rebuild, and paying for the adjustment first is money spent twice.
The cost of postponing
A joint with play wears in an avalanche: every impact enlarges the clearance, and the enlarged clearance makes the impacts harder. The extreme scenario for an end or a rod is the joint separating, after which the wheel stops obeying the steering. In practice that is rare, but it is exactly why noticeable play in the steering is one of the faults that make a car unroadworthy.
With the rack the scenario is less dramatic but expensive: the clearance in the mesh will not shrink by itself, worn bushes gradually finish off the bar and the housing, and yesterday’s cheap adjustment turns into a rebuild or a replacement. There is a domestic argument too — tyres: a car with play in the steering wears its tread noticeably faster than it should, and a set of tyres can cost more than the repair itself.
