Hydraulic power steering is a pump, driven by a belt from the engine, that moves fluid and helps turn the wheels. When the system is healthy it works almost silently. A whine or hum when turning is the most common signal that something is getting in its way, and in most cases the cause is inexpensive — provided you do not leave it. Below are the causes by frequency and the simple checks you can do without a workshop.
Where the whine comes from
The source is almost always the pump. Three things make it whine: not enough fluid, air in the system, or wear in the pump itself. Turning the wheel raises system pressure and the load on the pump — which is why the sound appears or grows in corners.
It is important to separate normal from faulty. A short hum with the wheel at full lock is the relief valve doing its job; even healthy cars behave that way. The worrying signs are different:
- the whine is there on any steering input, not only at full lock;
- the sound grows with engine revs;
- the steering has become heavier, or the effort is uneven;
- the fluid in the reservoir is dark, smells burnt or is foaming.
Causes by frequency

The first three are the most common and the cheapest. A pump rarely whines on its own account — it usually wears out after long service on a low level or on old fluid.
The belt is a special case. On most cars the power steering pump is driven by the same accessory belt as the alternator, so a slipping belt produces both a squeal and a drop in system pressure. How that fault sounds is covered on the symptom page belt squeal.
Checking it yourself
Three steps that need no pit and no tools:
- The reservoir. With the engine cold, check the level between the MIN and MAX marks. Assess the fluid while you are there: fresh fluid is clear, reddish or greenish; dark brown with a burnt smell means it needs changing. Foam or bubbles mean air in the system.
- The stationary test. With the engine running, turn the wheel from lock to lock while parked. If the whine is just as audible standing still, the hydraulics are involved rather than the suspension. If you hear clicks or knocking instead of a whine, that is a different story.
- The moving test. If the sound appears only in corners while driving and the wheel turns quietly when parked, the power steering may be innocent: a loaded wheel bearing produces a similar hum in corners. The differences are on the symptom page humming when turning.
Hydraulic or electric: check which one you have
A point that matters on newer cars: a large share of 2010s models and practically every mainstream new car uses electric power steering rather than hydraulic. It has no pump and no fluid reservoir, so the classic hydraulic whine does not belong to it: electric steering either works quietly or, when it has problems, buzzes with its motor, becomes heavy in steps and lights the steering warning symbol on the dash.
Checking which you have is easy: look under the bonnet for a fluid reservoir with a steering-wheel pictogram on the cap. No reservoir means electric steering, and advice about levels and bleeding does not apply; its diagnosis goes through reading fault codes. There is an in-between variant too — electro-hydraulic steering, where an electric motor drives the pump: it can whine in the hydraulic manner and throw electrical fault codes at the same time.
How the repair is decided
Start cheap. Fresh fluid and bleeding the system solve a noticeable share of whining cases; replacing the pump without checking the level and the condition of the fluid is paying for the symptom rather than the cause.
If the pump does turn out to be worn, one question is worth asking: what happens to the rest of the system. A worn pump sends metal debris downstream, so a decent workshop flushes the system rather than simply bolting on a new pump — otherwise the debris left inside goes to work on the new one and on the rack seals. Ask about the flush before you agree to the job; it is not an upsell, it is what makes the repair last.
Can you drive with a whining pump
For a short time, yes — the car remains controllable. But two processes are working against you. First, a pump whining because of low fluid or air wears out fast, and within weeks a simple problem turns into a replacement. Second, a worn pump pushes metal debris through the system, which finishes off the rack seals — and the rack is the most expensive part of the steering. So treat a whine as a reason to look in the reservoir within a day or two, not to “watch it for a month”.
