Washing the engine bay looks like a harmless procedure, yet it is often right afterwards that a car starts squealing at start-up, misfiring at idle or answering with a strange rattle. There is nothing mysterious about it: water gets into places the designers never intended it to reach, and changes the behaviour of several parts at once. Most of those noises clear by themselves, but some mean real damage.
Why water changes anything at all
An engine bay is not sealed. Connectors, spark plug wells, the air filter housing, the accessory pulleys — all of it is designed for splashes and rain, but not for a directed jet. A pressure washer forces moisture past seals, and the cleaning product additionally washes factory grease off parts and reduces friction where friction is needed.
Hence three typical scenarios. First, water in the pulley grooves: the drive belt loses grip and starts slipping with a squeal. Second, moisture in the plug wells and on the ignition coils: the spark tracks away, the engine misfires and shakes. Third, water in sensor connectors: the readings drift, the electronics act on wrong data, and the idle speed wanders.
Which noises will clear by themselves

The separator is simple: a noise caused by water weakens with every drive. If the second day is quieter than the first and the third is barely noticeable, that is drying out and no intervention is needed. If the noise holds steady or grows, the water has merely revealed a problem that was there already — before the wash the part was running on the last of its grease or on dry friction.
What to do in the first few days
First, do not rush to a workshop the same evening. Give the car two or three drive-and-cool cycles, preferably with a long run at speed: warm air under the bonnet dries moisture faster than standing does. Second, open the bonnet and inspect the connectors and plug wells; water in the wells can be blown out or soaked up with a dry cloth. Third, listen to the engine cold each morning: moisture-related sounds show themselves most clearly at the first start.
If the squeal is still there after three days, it is a question of the belt and tensioner rather than the wash — alternator belt squeal: the causes. How the repair is decided
If the water only accelerated existing wear, the bill is small: a belt, an idler, a tensioner. The criterion is the same trend test — a part that was already at the end of its life keeps making noise after everything has dried, and that is what it is worth paying to replace. A part that goes quiet needs nothing at all.
Two things worth knowing. If the engine keeps misfiring after drying, ask for the fault codes to be read rather than the coils replaced by guesswork: a misfire code names the cylinder, and corroded connector contacts are cleaned rather than bought. And an alternator whose bearing grease was washed out will not recover — the whine is permanent, and catching it early means a bearing rather than a whole unit.
A separate recommendation for the future: if you wash the engine before a sale or after a repair, ask for the alternator, the fuse box and the air intake to be covered with film, and for the wash to be done by hand at low pressure. That removes most of the scenarios described here.
The hardest part is telling whether the noise is really weakening. Hearing remembers loudness poorly but catches differences well in direct comparison.
