Grinding at startup is metal on metal, and in most cases it is born in the starter-and-flywheel pair. Less often the source turns out to be the timing chain, the water pump or the camshaft phasers. When the sound occurs — before the engine fires or after — immediately splits the causes into two groups, so we start there, then cover the checks that need no tools.
Grinding before it fires: starter and ring gear
Until the engine starts, only one pair is turning: the starter’s pinion and the flywheel’s ring gear. Grinding at that moment means the engagement is going wrong:
- the pinion does not engage fully and skips over the tooth tips;
- the ring gear teeth are chewed — usually in patches, because the engine stops in the same positions, and then the grinding does not happen at every start;
- the pinion drive is worn and slips under load with a dry grinding sound;
- the starter is misaligned on its mounting after a recent removal — rare but real.
A separate scenario is grinding after the engine has fired, when the pinion has not disengaged and the engine is spinning the starter. The sound is loud and screeching, and it is a reason not to postpone the repair: engine speed is far beyond what a starter can take. If instead of cranking you only hear machine-gun chatter, start from the starter clicks but will not crank.
Grinding after it fires: timing drive and accessories
If the starter has already gone quiet and a grinding overtone remains, look in the engine itself and its accessories.
- A timing chain with a tired tensioner whips the guide for the first seconds — a rustling, grinding sound from the front cover that fades as oil pressure builds; see signs of a failing timing chain tensioner and signs of a stretched timing chain.
- Cam phasers — the actuators that change valve timing — give a dry rattle rather than grinding, covered in signs of a failing VVT actuator.
- The water pump with a broken bearing grinds and whines constantly rather than only at startup, and often leaves coolant traces — signs of a failing water pump.
- Accessory belt idlers with dried grease rustle and grind when cold until the bearings warm up.

Narrowing it down without tools
Three observations you can genuinely make on your driveway:
- A restart on a warm engine. If the grinding has gone, hydraulics (chain, phasers) are likely; if it remains, the starter or the accessories.
- When the sound occurs. Have a helper turn the key while you stand at the open bonnet: grinding before the engine fires lives in the starter, after it in the engine or the accessories.
- The character of the sound. A thin squeal is not grinding but a slipping belt — that has its own page, squeal on startup. Grinding is always metallic, with a grainy texture.
Those observations are usually enough for the workshop conversation to start from a specific component rather than “something grinds somewhere”.

How the repair is decided
The economics are simple: the pinion drive is an inexpensive part; the ring gear and the flywheel are not, because the gearbox has to come off to reach them. The earlier the grinding is caught, the cheaper it is.
Two things worth asking. Whether the ring gear was actually inspected — with the starter off it can be turned and looked at, and a workshop that replaces a starter without doing so is guessing. And whether the starter is being rebuilt or replaced: a worn pinion drive on an otherwise healthy starter is a cheap repair, but only if the ring gear it meshes with is sound, otherwise the new drive chews itself on the old teeth.
What delay leads to
The pinion and ring gear wear each other: a chewed pinion eats the ring gear and vice versa. In the worst case the starter one day simply fails to engage and the car will not start away from home. Chain grinding is dangerous differently: a stretched chain can jump a tooth, and that means disturbed valve timing, lost power and, on many engines, the risk of valves meeting pistons. Both scenarios develop over weeks and months, and both are much cheaper to stop at the beginning.
