You turn the key and instead of confident cranking there is a dry chatter or a series of clicks from under the bonnet, and the crankshaft does not move. It sounds like a dead starter, but in most cases the supply is to blame: the battery, the terminals or the earth. Here is the starting chain in order — from cheap and simple to complex — with the signs gathered into a table you can use to guess the cause in a minute without opening your wallet.
Where the chatter comes from
On the starter body sits a solenoid — an electromagnet that does two things at once: it pushes the pinion into mesh with the flywheel and closes the heavy contacts, sending a large current to the starter motor. The solenoid can only pull in confidently at normal voltage.
If there is not enough current, a cycle begins: the solenoid pulls in, the voltage sags under load, the solenoid drops out, the voltage recovers, the solenoid pulls in again. Repeated several times a second, that cycle sounds like machine-gun chatter. So chattering is almost always a symptom of weak current rather than a broken mechanism: the starter itself may be perfectly healthy.
Cause one: battery and contacts
In workshop experience most cases hide here:
- a flat or tired battery — after a frosty night, short trips, forgotten lights, or simply age; in the cold the capacity falls and there is not enough cranking current;
- corroded terminals — a whitish or greenish deposit on the posts works as resistance, choking the current at the very start;
- a poor earth — a corroded or loose strap between the body, the engine and the battery: the voltage at the starter sags although the battery is healthy.
A quick check: switch on the headlights and turn the key. If the lights dim noticeably as it chatters, the battery or terminals are the cause; if they stay bright and the starter still chatters, look further, in the wiring and the starter itself.
When the starter itself is to blame
If the supply is sound, the suspects are:
- burnt heavy contacts in the solenoid — it clicks but no current reaches the motor;
- worn brushes or bushes — the starter receives current but cannot turn the shaft;
- the pinion drive — if the starter whirrs while the engine does not turn, the one-way clutch is slipping;
- a chewed flywheel ring gear — the pinion hits the teeth and cannot engage, and metallic grinding joins the chatter, as covered in grinding noise when starting the engine.
The good news: a starter is a repairable unit. The solenoid, the brushes and the pinion drive are replaced individually, and that is noticeably cheaper than a complete starter.

A single click with no chatter has its own breakdown in the starter clicks but will not crank.
What you can do on the spot
The sequence that works most often: inspect and tighten the terminals and clean off any deposit; try a jump start from another car, observing polarity; and after a successful start check the battery’s charge and the alternator’s output, or the story repeats the next morning.
If the start still fails, the workshop remains. Two things are worth asking there. Whether the voltage was measured at the starter itself during cranking rather than only at the battery — that single measurement separates “weak battery” from “lost current on the way”. And whether the starter will be rebuilt or replaced: solenoid contacts and brushes are cheap, and on many starters that is the whole repair.
