The G4FC is the most common 1.6 petrol engine in earlier Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio generations, and one of the most frequent complaints about it sounds like this: it ticks at idle. The phrase alarms people because online the word “ticking” has become welded to the words “bore scoring”. In practice the same timbre can have a perfectly standard explanation or be a reason for an endoscope. Here is where the line runs.

What ticks on this engine as standard

The G4FC is a naturally aspirated engine with port injection, and part of its sound picture is built in by design. Port injectors click their solenoid valves several times a second per cylinder; with the bonnet open that is heard as an even dry chatter, especially at the front of the cylinder head. The valve train adds its own contribution. That sound has characteristic markers: it is even in loudness, does not grow with warm-up, does not increase under load and barely comes through into the cabin with the bonnet shut. There are also external sources wrongly attributed to the engine: a chattering accessory belt idler, a noisy alternator, a rattling exhaust manifold heat shield. They are separated simply — by whether the sound changes with the drive belt removed and when the shield is tapped.

The behaviour of the sound through warm-up is worth listening to separately. Many mechanical clearances are larger on a cold engine, so ticking at start-up that fades after a couple of minutes is a common and usually uncritical picture. It is worse when the sound gets louder on a warm engine rather than quieter. Where the bore scoring talk comes from

Bore scoring is damage to the cylinder surface — marks on the wall that cause oil consumption to rise, compression to fall and a dull knock to appear. On this engine family two mechanisms are usually discussed. The first is abrasive particles reaching the cylinders; in particular, the theory of catalytic converter ceramic breaking up and being drawn back into the combustion chamber is widely debated. The second is ordinary operating conditions: overheating, poor fuel, late oil changes, regular cold starts under high load.

It is important to stay sober: ticking on its own does not prove scoring. The diagnosis is made by measurement rather than by sound — compression, measured oil consumption, and an endoscope inspection of the cylinders through the plug holes. How the decision is made

The gap between an oil change and a rebuild is exactly why a diagnosis should not be made from a forum thread. The sensible order is: first record the sound and note the conditions in which it appears, then measure oil consumption over a couple of thousand kilometres, and only then, if the figures are worrying, go for an endoscope.

Two things mechanics do not always say. Oil consumption is the single most informative number here, and it has to be measured properly — level checked on the same level ground, at the same temperature, with the mileage between checks written down; impressions are worthless. And an endoscope inspection is cheap compared with everything it rules out, so ask for the photographs of the bores rather than a verbal verdict.
