A whine that appears at, say, 70 km/h, holds for a few hundred metres and disappears as soon as you accelerate harder sounds so odd that many drivers write it off as the road surface. In fact that selectivity by speed is not an accident but the signature of a mechanism: it is how gear drives behave when the teeth or the shaft bearings are worn. Here is why the sound is tied to a narrow window of speeds and how to tell the gearbox from the hub and the tyres.
Why the whine is tied to speed
Every pair of gears makes a sound at its meshing frequency as it turns — determined by the number of teeth and the shaft speed. While the tooth surfaces are smooth, that frequency stays a quiet background. Wear, scoring or slack shaft bearings amplify it many times over.
Then the body comes into it. Every body has its own resonant frequencies; when the meshing frequency coincides with one of them, the panels start singing along and the whine becomes clearly audible in the cabin. Accelerate and the frequency rises past the resonance, and the sound drops away. Hence the feeling that it “only whines at 70”. That is also why the window of speeds often shifts when you change gear: the shaft speeds change and so does the coincidence point.
Telling the gearbox from other sources

There are two key checks: changing gear and coasting. If at 70 km/h you shift from fourth to third and the whine changes pitch or moves, the source rotates inside the gearbox. If lifting off noticeably changes the character of the sound, it depends on the load on the teeth — again the transmission. What wears inside
Three things are usually to blame. The first is the shaft bearings: they work constantly and are the first to react to overheating and old oil. The second is the teeth of the driving and driven gears of a particular ratio; then the whine is heard in that gear specifically, while the car is quiet in the others. The third is the final drive and differential: their whine is broader in range and responds more strongly to power versus coasting.
A separate and quite mundane cause is the oil. A low level, the wrong viscosity or mileage far past the schedule worsen the lubrication, and the gearbox starts making noise before its time. Checking the level costs almost nothing and comes before any serious decisions. How the repair is decided
An even whine with no vibration and no stray knocks does not call for stopping: people drive with it for a long time, sometimes years. Take notice if rumbling, jolting, difficult gear selection or metal particles on the drain plug magnet appear — that is the stage at which the repair gets more expensive with every thousand kilometres.
So the decision turns on two cheap checks before anything is opened. The level and condition of the gearbox oil, and what is on the drain plug magnet: a fine grey paste is normal wear, a bristle of metal shavings is not. Together they separate “change the oil and watch it” from “plan a rebuild”.
Two things mechanics do not always say. If the gearbox has to come off, the clutch kit is replaced at the same time — the labour is already paid for, and reaching it again later costs the whole job. And the oil specification matters more than the brand: gearbox oils are not interchangeable, and the wrong friction modifier produces exactly the noise you were trying to cure.
