A familiar scenario: the car arrived for a seasonal wheel change quiet and left with an even hum at speed. The first thought is that the fitters got something wrong. Sometimes that is true, but more often the tyre change merely altered the conditions in which a sound that already existed became audible. The chronology helps: whether the hum was there from the workshop gate or came out over a few days, and whether it changes in corners.

What a tyre change actually alters

Changing a set of wheels changes several things at once. First, the tread pattern itself: winter tyres with big blocks are louder than summer ones with longitudinal grooves, and you hear it from the first kilometre. Second, the position of specific tyres on the car: during rotation, a sawtooth-worn wheel can move from the rear axle to the front, closer to the cabin, and its hum becomes far more noticeable.

Third, the hubs are disturbed. A wheel tightened with uneven torque distorts the brake disc and produces judder; a disc fitted onto a mounting face that was not cleaned of rust does the same. And finally, removing the wheel makes obvious a bearing that was already on the edge — until then its hum was drowned by the noise of the old tyres.

The clearest check is the last one. Swap the front wheels with the rear ones and drive the same route. If the hum has moved back with the wheels and become quieter, the tyre is the cause. If it stays where it was, the tyres are innocent and the hub needs checking. The second most useful trick is to run your palm across the tread against the direction of rotation: sawtooth wear feels like a row of small steps, and it is exactly what produces that low hum.

What to do with the answer

If the tread is the problem, the options are few. Uneven wear does not smooth itself out again, but it can be slowed: get the alignment checked, check the pressures and rotate the wheels to the manufacturer’s pattern. With severe sawtooth wear the tyre is replaced — the hum will keep growing, and wet grip falls along the way.

If the hum is not about the tyres, the next step is a lift. The mechanic raises the wheel, spins it by hand and listens, and checks for play by rocking the wheel in two planes. How the repair is decided

The useful habit is to start with the cheapest step. Retightening the wheel bolts and checking the pressures takes ten minutes and removes some theories for nothing; only then does it make sense to pay for a diagnosis.

If a bearing is confirmed, two things shape the job: whether your car takes a separate bearing pressed into the hub or a complete hub assembly, and the hub nut torque, which decides how long the new bearing lasts. If the tyres are confirmed, ask about the cause of the uneven wear rather than only the tyre — alignment out of specification or tired dampers will wear the new set the same way.

If you are not sure whether the sound changed after rotating the wheels, do not rely on memory: a couple of decibels is almost impossible to judge by ear.
