A confusing situation: with the windows up the car seems perfectly healthy, and the moment you drop the glass a clear knock, tick or grinding appears in time with the speed. The first thought is that you imagined it. In fact this is ordinary physics, and it is convenient to use as a tool: the fact that a sound is only audible from outside already tells you something about its source.
Why glass swallows this particular sound
The body passes different frequencies into the cabin differently. Low rumble and vibration travel through metal, the subframe and the mountings — you hear them even in a sealed car. High-frequency sounds — clicks, ringing, grinding, ticking — travel mainly through the air and are absorbed beautifully by glass, seals and door sound deadening. An open window removes that barrier and the sound arrives directly.
Hence the practical conclusion: if a fault is only audible through an open window, it is almost certainly high-frequency and located outside — in a wheel arch, in a brake mechanism, in the exhaust, under the floor. Problems that sit on the body through mountings — the engine, a loaded suspension, the gearbox — are usually audible with the window closed too.

Everything in that table has one thing in common: the source is in a wheel arch or under the floor — the zone from which the sound goes straight into an open window and barely reaches the cabin through the body. So the list of suspects is immediately shorter than with the usual “something knocks somewhere”.
Some of those sounds are harmless, some are a direct warning. How to use the open window for diagnosis
The trick is worth turning into a small protocol. Find a narrow street with a wall or high fence along one side: the reflected sound comes back into the open window and the source is twice as audible. Drive the stretch at 20–40 km/h first with the left window down, then the right — the difference between the runs points at the side.
Then add variations: the same stretch coasting, under light throttle, and with a single touch of the brake pedal. A sound that disappears under braking is the brake mechanism. A sound in time with wheel rotation and independent of engine speed is the running gear. How urgent it is and how the repair is decided
The rule is simple: a sound audible only from outside is judged by type, not by loudness. A pad indicator squeal means there is not much friction material left before metal, and it should not be put off. CV joint clicking will wait weeks, but not months. A rattling heat shield can calmly wait for a scheduled visit.
What decides the work is what the sound turns out to be, and the checks are cheap. A stone in the brake mechanism and a bent disc shield are sorted with the wheel off in minutes — no parts at all. Exhaust and shield fasteners are tightened or a rubber hanger is replaced. Only pads, a CV joint or a bearing are genuinely a parts job.
Two things mechanics do not always say. First, if the pads are being changed because of the indicator, ask about the state of the discs at the same time — the indicator only warns about the friction material, and a worn disc gives the same squeal back on new pads.
