Suspension springs carry the whole weight of the car — engine, body, passengers and load. Unlike dampers, which absorb oscillation, springs take that oscillation: they compress on every bump, millions of times over their life. The metal fatigues gradually, so worn springs are rarely noticed in time — the car’s behaviour changes so slowly that the driver adapts. Below are the signs that catch spring fatigue early, simple checks without a lift, and what decides the replacement.
The main signs of wear
Tired or broken springs give themselves away with a set of symptoms, and almost all of them are visible without tools:
- The car has sagged. Ground clearance is lower: the wheels look sunk into the arches and the car sits lower than in the photos from when you bought it.
- A tilt. One corner of the body is lower than the rest — a common case with a snapped coil or uneven fatigue.
- Bottoming out in potholes. The suspension bottoms out on a moderate defect with a hard metallic impact — a tired spring cannot hold the body up and the work falls to the bump stop.
- Roll and float. The car leans more noticeably in corners and rocks longer over undulations.
- Knocking and creaking over bumps. A snapped coil knocks against its seat or the next coil; dry coils creak over slow bumps.
A separate note about winter: in the cold the suspension rubber stiffens, bottoming out happens more often, and a coil with a fatigue crack is more willing to break after a cold night. If a knock appeared in the first frosts, that is not a coincidence but a reason for an inspection.

How to check the springs yourself
The first tool is a tape measure. Measure vertically from the centre of the hub up to the edge of the arch on each side. A difference of more than 10–15 mm between left and right is a reason for a diagnosis; the figure for your model is in the handbook.
The second step is inspection. Turn the wheels to full lock and shine a torch on the spring: chipped paint, orange corrosion in the lower coils and, above all, a fresh bright fracture are visible without dismantling. The bottom coil breaks most often — it is closest to the road and the first to suffer from water and salt.
Why look at the bottom coil first? It works in the most loaded zone while being constantly blasted with sand and water from the wheel. The factory coating is chipped through over time, moisture and salt get into the micro-cracks, and corrosion undermines the metal from inside. A fatigue crack grows unnoticed for months and the coil then breaks in an instant — in a pothole or under a full load.
The third step is load. Bounce each corner of the body: the car should compress springily and return with no knocks or creaks. If you hear a dull thump specifically on compression, that resembles bottoming out — more on that picture on knocking over bumps and in signs of worn bump stops.
Springs or dampers: not confusing them
The two work as a pair and their symptoms overlap. The rough rule: springs are responsible for height, dampers for oscillation. Sagging, tilt and a permanently squatting rear are about springs. They are also linked: on sagged springs the damper works compressed, bottoms into the bump stop more often and dies early. So when springs are replaced it is worth assessing the dampers, and vice versa — what happens if you do not is in driving with dead shock absorbers.
How the repair is decided
Springs are replaced with the strut removed and stripped, so the labour is the same as for a damper. That drives every sensible decision here.
Springs on an axle are replaced in pairs — a single replacement leaves the car uneven in height and stiffness. While the strut is apart it is worth renewing the top mount bearing, the bump stop and the boot: the disassembly is already paid for. And after the job the alignment should be checked, because ride height changes the geometry.
On choosing parts, do not chase the lowest price: cheap springs made of soft steel sag within a season or two, and the whole labour cost is paid again. For cars that constantly carry loads or run on unpaved roads there are heavy-duty versions — they hold their height longer, though they make the ride slightly firmer over small stuff.
