Replacing a belt ought to close the subject of squealing, but cars often come back from the workshop and squeal again a day or two later — and sometimes right on the way out. That is not always poor work: the causes fall into three groups — the new belt itself, installation errors, and the parts that were the real source of the sound before the change. Here they are in order.
What counts as normal
A new multi-rib belt does need a little time for its ribs to bed into the pulleys: a light rustle over the first few dozen kilometres is within normal. But a bright squeal never is. A healthy drive with a correctly fitted fresh belt is silent both cold and with the air conditioning on. Installation errors — the commonest cause

Two rows deserve explanation. The first is tension set by eye: on cars with manual adjustment a mechanic without a gauge easily errs in both directions, and an automatic tensioner with a weak spring will not produce proper force even with a perfect belt. The second is oil contamination: if what killed the old belt was oil or coolant weeping, a new belt on dirty pulleys repeats its fate within days.
When the part itself is at fault
Less often, but it happens, everything is fitted correctly and it is the new belt that squeals. Usually that means cheap unbranded parts: a hard rubber compound does not follow the pulley well, the ribs are moulded with geometry faults, and the belt is noisy from day one. Branded EPDM belts have practically none of that problem. The other version is a part of the wrong length or with a different number of ribs: formally the belt fits, but the tensioner ends up at the edge of its working range. It is checked by comparing the catalogue number against the VIN — faster and cheaper than trying other versions.
If the belt was never the problem
The most galling scenario: it was not the belt squealing at all, and the replacement could never have helped. Similar sounds come from alternator bearings, guide idlers, the water pump and the decoupler pulley — the one-way clutch on the alternator pulley that smooths jerks in the belt; when worn it makes noise and rattles. Finding the cause in ten minutes
- Note when it squeals. Only cold, for the first seconds — tension at its limit or moisture; under load (a/c, steering) — under-tensioned; constantly — misalignment, size, or another part. The morning scenario is covered on squeal on startup and in squealing under the bonnet when cold.
- Inspect how the belt sits. With a torch, go round every pulley: the belt must lie in all the grooves of each pulley, not shifted onto an outer rib.
- Judge the tension. With manual adjustment, roughly 5–10 millimetres of deflection under finger pressure on the long run; an automatic tensioner has range marks, and the pointer should not sit at the edge.
- Turn the idlers by hand. With the engine off and the belt removed or slackened, each idler and pulley should turn smoothly, without roughness, play or rustling.
- Check the pulleys are clean. An oily film in the grooves can be felt with a finger — and explains a returning squeal better than any theory.
- Compare with the old belt. If it has not been thrown away, hold the two together: a difference in length of more than a centimetre or a different number of ribs is a ready answer.
One more useful guide is where exactly the sound lives. Squeal from slipping spreads around the whole engine bay, while an idler or bearing whine is local: a mechanic’s stethoscope, or a long screwdriver held against a stationary part of the housing with due care, finds the source in a couple of minutes.
How the repair is decided
If a workshop did the change, start by going back to them: putting right an under-tensioned or misaligned belt is a normal warranty case, and decent workshops close it free. The line between warranty and new work is exactly the line between installation errors and a different part — which is why locating the source before the conversation is worth ten minutes.
Two things mechanics do not always say. The tensioner and the idlers are consumables with a service life comparable to the belt’s, and replacing them at the same time costs almost nothing extra in labour because the belt is already off — a quote that includes only the belt is a quote that comes back. And if the belt was contaminated, the leak has to be found first: a new belt fitted over an unfixed leak is money spent twice.
